This morning, I had the pleasure of indulging in a Chicken Fried Steak Skillet for breakfast at Hy-Vee in Manhattan, KS, and it was nothing short of a culinary masterpiece. Larry, the culinary artist, deserves high praise not only for creating an exceptional breakfast but also for managing the entire kitchen and register single-handedly when I walked in to order—a feat that’s truly remarkable.
The Chicken Fried Steak was cooked to perfection, boasting a crispy, golden crust that encased tender, flavorful meat. The sausage gravy, generously ladled over the top, was rich and creamy, with just the right amount of seasoning to complement the steak without overpowering it. It was a perfect marriage of textures and flavors that left me craving more with each bite.
Topping the skillet were the scrambled eggs, light and fluffy, with a vibrant yellow hue that signaled their freshness. The eggs were cooked just right, soft and moist without being runny, adding a comforting layer of warmth to the dish.
But the pièce de résistance had to be the toast. It was toasted to a golden brown, crisp on the outside while remaining soft and buttery on the inside. Paired with strawberry jelly, it was the perfect sweet contrast to the savory skillet. Larry clearly took care to achieve the perfect balance in every aspect of this meal.
What makes this breakfast experience even more impressive is the fact that Larry was the only one in the kitchen at the time, juggling both the cooking and handling the register. Despite the pressure, he delivered a meal that was meticulously crafted with attention to detail and a passion for quality. His dedication to his craft deserves to be recognized, as he managed to create an extraordinary dining experience under challenging circumstances.

Update: Contacted bakery dept. and they said they got a new display case and would need to make some changes so the cakes don’t dry out. The rep. was happy to refund my purchase price and apologized for the dry cakes! I look forward to seeing the changes and will try the bakery again in a month or so.Original post: Not sure what’s going on in the bakery department. I love the layered cakery cakes (lemon & strawberry shortcake). I have purchased them several times in the past and have always loved them. However, tonight I picked up a Strawberry shortcake for my daughter’s birthday tomorrow and a small lemon for tonight. Cut into the lemon and it was super hard and dried out. So disappointing especially since these cakes aren’t cheap. Now I have to come up with a plan B for my daughter’s birthday tomorrow :-(

I highly recommend the Manhattan Hyvee bakery! The staff is always so accomodating and kind. I asked for a "Where the Wild Things Are" themed cake for my son's 1st birthday and the cake they made far exceeded my expectations! Definitely will always go with them in the future!

I had a very specific wedding cake design in mind and they did an amazing job matching it. The design included chocolate dipped strawberries and it looked and tasted great. We also ordered vegan cupcakes for a few of our guests which were a huge hit as they don't usually get dessert at events like this. We had way too much sheet cake for the number of guests able to come, but everyone said it tasted great!

We stopped using their grocery pickup service because we often got home and realized we were missing items. It was always a hassle to call and arrange to get resolved. I’m also not impressed with their produce quality. Lettuce/salad is often spoiled, which you don’t know until you get home and open it. Even containers with good use-by dates would have rotten greens inside. Yuck. Hy-Vee is also a lot more expensive than Walmart. We compared a few basic items and it was frankly shocking.
