The fish was not good. Not seasoned. The cornbread was crumbly and old. The macaroni and beans are okay, nothing special. And it didn't look clean as it should. The lady up front could be a little nicer.

I ordered the fried chicken cabbage and macaroni salad. Everything tasted bland. The chicken leg was over heat lamped and very dry! The lady who waited on me had very poor customer service skills! Not welcoming at all! WILL NOT BE

Great value for the food, good flavor. Boyfriend's chicken tenders were a little dry but his catfish was delish. Fried chicken was good, very tender and juicy. Fry flour was well spiced and seasoned. Potato salad had great flavor and the mac n cheese was solid. Vegetarians could make do with sides but there wasn't a main protein choice that would work, just mashed potatos and green beans. For the price point it's more than worth it!
Vegetarian options: Mashed potatoes, potato salad, green beans, maybe Mac n cheese? Mostly just some sides
Parking: You can park across the street and walk across from the rite aid or Dollar general. Depending on the time of day you should have plenty of parking.

Today was my first time eating at Southern Express Soul Food, and I learned something new... Comfort Food and Soul Food are not the same thing, but the difference isn't in the recipe. Let me explain.I walked in and was greeted with a smile and friendly conversation with the nice woman behind the counter. I've been to many restaurants with a nice staff that made me feel welcomed, but I had never felt more welcome than I did here. As I ate, I thought about why it was that I felt so welcomed. What I realized was the woman and gentleman behind the counter were genuinely nice folks that were passionate about the food and service they provided. I felt that they sincerely wanted to share their passion with others. The people running this restaurant served comfort food, but they put their soul into it.The woman helped me decide what to get from this cafeteria style restaurant and when she told me how cheap it was, I knew I was in trouble. As of April 2024, every item is $1.75. I gorged myself with fresh and delicious food. I had a chicken thigh, 2 pieces of fish, jambalaya, mac & cheese, and macaroni salad... I wanted to add other things but my plate was overflowing. All of this food, including a can of Coke was $12.25 plus tax.You can tell when something is made from scratch and everything was. Plus it was so delicious... The love that went into the preparation and serving of the food truly made it soul food.I had passed this place many times over the years when I visited Louisville and kept meaning to stop. I now regret not stopping sooner.
Vegetarian options: There were many pasta salads, cheese potatoes, and sweet potato, and other vegetable dishes, though I did not ask if the greens and green beans were vegetarian.
Wheelchair accessibility: The entrance is sidewalk level, but when I went, only one of the double doors was working.

The food was amazing. That is the best and freshest Fried Chicken and Fish and all of the fixings for the sides of any real soul food restaurant! I could go to this place daily if I could. Such amazing food and specials every day. And what I could not believe is the cost of the food should be way higher than what it is in my opinion, for what it's worth.
