After the initial excitement of confusing this Tacos El Gordo for the super famous Tijuana chain out west, it was a little defeating to realize there was no affiliation with this one-off location. The food was the most disappointing of all, and after several lackluster visits, I'm not all that surprised this location is gone.The most redeeming quality about this spot was its proximity to the airport. Prior to their recent makeover, MSY was devoid of just about any kind of quality eatery in sight. Even outside of the airport, it was Tacos El Gordo that was the easy option. Even if the food wasn't up to par, it was certainly still better than most of the drive-thru chains nearby.But the food was still just average at best. The combination plates and burritos were always the heartiest option, but the namesake item (i.e tacos) were always very subpar for me. Those tortillas were no bueno and the tacos themselves were the signature item, yet my least favorite things to eat. I was always excited to see their trompo / al pastor spit going during the day, but I often got a more dry hunks than anything else.While the prices weren't ever all that friendly, they were fairly on par with similar spots in the area. The drive-thru was pretty handy, but the pandemic ultimately had its way with TEG in NOLA.
