Life has its bittersweet moments, and I’ve found one of the sweetest right here on Magazine Street. I’m in New Orleans for medical treatment for the next several months, and while my journey hasn’t been the easiest, I’ve discovered that kindness can be as comforting as chocolate.
A few dear friends ordered a dozen cupcakes from Bittersweet Confections, and when one of the owners, Cheryl, heard I was sick, she personally added me to their delivery route, just because. I can’t promise that kind of door to door service for everyone (I happened to live a few blocks away), but the gesture itself meant more than words can say.
I opted to pick them up and eventually, I ventured out for some fresh air and walked to the shop myself. Inside, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming, the kind of place where you instantly feel like a regular. Jake and Grace treated me (and everyone else) with genuine Southern hospitality. You can tell they love what they do, and it shows in every cup of coffee and crumb of cake.
Now, technically, sweets are off limits for me right now but let’s just say resistance crumbled after one look at their cupcakes. I took a few bites of the Red Velvet and chocolate with a coconut frosting, and they were so good. The rest I shared with my nurses, who agreed that Bittersweet’s confections are pure medicine for the soul.
For now, I’m savoring the occasional breakfast and the comforting smiles that come with it. When I finish my treatment, you can bet I’ll be celebrating here one perfectly sweet bite at a time.
Bittersweet Confections is more than a bakery, it’s a reminder that kindness and connection are the sweetest things of all.

I ordered a birthday cake , the funfetti cake, and asked if they could add more funfetti and disco dust and to please make it over the top sparkly and then some more- i went out of my way to explain it . What my son did receive on his birthday dinner was a plain white cake with the candles. For anyone who is asking for a bit of personalization or modification of their standard cakes - make sure to ask them to take a picture and approve it prior to delivery . A special cake should be beautiful , or fun, or extraordinary - it should make the recipient smile or feel good. This was such a disappointment.
Opera cake was delightful!

If I could give ZERO stars I would. I made a pick up order for a cake for 2 MALE attorneys who just passed the bar exam. I SPECIFIED THAT THEY ARE MEN. The cake I received was a pink cake with florals and SLOPPY handwriting. It was so ugly. Why in the hell would I give 2 men a pink cake ?? They also made some letters capitalized and some lowercase. Makes no sense. Then I asked the manager to rectify the situation by comping a sandwich for me while I wait 30 mins PAST the time it was supposed to be ready. Essentially wasting my lunch break ! The manager refused to comp my lunch. I will never go back there again. The customer service is HORRIBLE. I wouldn’t even buy my dogs birthday cake here much less a human. They made it with no care. So they will never see me again. They take no accountability. HORRIBLE.

My husband and I have been going to Bittersweet for years (we used to work right next door). Amazing coffee and pastries/food! We always get Bittersweet cupcakes for every birthday. WHen we started planning our wedding, we knew we wanted Bittersweet to be a part of it. Sheryl and Avery were amazing from start to finish! They made sure we got exactly what we wanted and the cake was absolutely beautiful! Everyone raved about the flavors (almond with lemon icing, strawberry with vanilla icing, and red velvet with cream cheese–YUM!) and every single piece was gone by the end of the night. They even helped us when ordering some favors for our rehearsal dinner. The entire process was easy and stress free. Sheryl and Avery treated us like we were family and I just don’t think you will get that anywhere else. 10/10, will continue to give this amazing shop our business!

Amazing if you need cake for any occasion. Bittersweet Confection is the spot for you. Cheryl will get you the cake you desire she always goes above and beyond. I've order so many cakes she's now like family. This is the only place I get cakes from you won't be.

Last year I ordered a Lambeth style cake for my birthday. I sat on this for a whole year because I don't like giving negative reviews. I just looked at a picture from my birthday and I was so annoyed. Custom cakes are incredibly expensive and we went through lots of conversations about what the cake should look like. I said multiple times it needs lots of green with pink and purple accents. I specifically said no white icing. Then, the cake I got had 0 green and a base of white. I saw their notes. It said no white. My emails never mentioned white because I didn't want it. I specifically said green repeatedly. They confirmed.
Yes, the cake tasted good. Yes, it was ready on time. However, when you're paying $200 for custom cake decorations you should get what you asked for and confirmed email and phone and photos.
My inspo is the bottom photo and the top is what I got. I said make the base color lime green and the accents purple and pink.
As it was the day of the party there was nothing to be done about the cake. I tried to be excited about it, but I was really so sad that I was thinking I was doing something nice for myself and didn't get what I wanted at all.

I’m from out of town and wanted to grab some cake or cupcakes for my husbands birthday. Some friends and I walked over to Bittersweet Confections and took in all the delish smells ! The place was clean, they offered water & everything looked amazing. We had the best service and everyone we interacted with was so kind!! These cupcakes we had were AMAZING!!! My friends got a scone and a brownie and they said they were so good as well! I love that they had some local jewelry, books, and other cute things as well. I picked up a child’s book for my daughter, she will love it! They also had cake toppers and candles with a match book, which is a great touch!
I highly recommend checking this place out. Thank you so much!!

Ordered Bittersweet Confections signature bittersweet cake for our wedding and it did not disappoint! We were warned that it was very rich. Well, it was rich, and decadent, and very moist. All our guests couldn’t stop raving about how wonderful the cake was. They were amazed at how wonderful it was. They enjoyed the other tarts and desserts they provided, but, the bittersweet cake was the show stopper. Thanks Bittesweet Confections for making our wedding cake and desserts!
I purchased some German chocolate cupcakes for my husband’s birthday yesterday. He was very impressed with the taste and is a harsh critic. The staff worked with me on ordering at the last minute and pick up. They were very accommodating and flexible. I also enjoyed the lavender violet lemonade Arnold Palmer I ordered while I waited for the cupcakes to be retrieved. Thanks so much! I will definitely purchase items again in the future.
Love to drop by here on my way to the office for a coffee and a pastry. The team is always so welcoming.
Loved the dried noodle stir stick. Great idea.
We hoped to get our wedding cake and work with Bittersweet. I think the service is great, but the cake is so overpriced. If its worth it to the bride and groom, then so be it, but I can’t fathom spending ALOT of money for a cake only to realize not everyone’s gonna eat. This place charges for every little thing from cake tasting, paying for your own coffee while cake tasting, cake stand, etc. I understand it’s a local business in New Orleans that is respected , but where is the incentive in all of these items that we have to pay? Maybe don’t charge for cake tasting or if you do and the bride does decide to go with you, then give us a discount? Overpriced in general.
