High Hopes, Subtle Issues – Feedback from a Longtime Pho Fan:

I rarely write critical reviews, but I felt it was worth sharing this experience in case it’s helpful.

Lily’s Café has a great reputation (4.7 rating!), and I came in with high expectations. I ordered pho with no jalapeños and extra condensed milk in my Vietnamese coffee. Unfortunately, both requests were overlooked. Not a huge issue on its own, but it made the experience feel a bit rushed or inattentive.

The bigger concern was the broth—it had a slight sourness that suggested the very early stages of turning. It’s a subtle flavor change that most people might not notice, but for those familiar with pho, it stands out. I mentioned it to one of the owners (a man who took my order) and even invited him to taste it, but he didn’t respond. When I asked to take it to go, the other owner—a woman—kindly helped and explained that the pho had been cooked the night before. I completely understood—sourness doesn’t necessarily mean it’s old. Even fresh pho can sour if stored while still hot, which is something anyone familiar with pho preparation would recognize.

This isn’t meant as a harsh critique—just honest feedback from someone who was genuinely looking forward to the meal. With such a great reputation, I trust this was just an off day. Still, I hope this encourages a bit more care in how orders are handled and how the broth is stored moving forward.

I love going to a place that is family run. The staff were so welcoming and warm. The food was authentic, and I loved the special touches that made Lily's dishes stand out. The place itself is charming and felt like a great place to go when needing to recover from a wild night out. The flavored tea was also yummy! The iced coffee was also phenomenal. I love that it all wasn't just ice! Would definitely be my go to viet place in Nola

In store experiences have always been wonderful. This last time… not so much. The broth smelled like rotten chicken.

I ordered the lemongrass tofu banh-mi, veggie dumplings(came w 5-6 dumplings and a soy-based sauce), and the tofu rolls (came w 2 rolls peanut sauce). I really enjoyed all of them! I ate the rolls and dumplings first and that filled me up! I only had a couple bites of the sandwich. All so good, would order again

The food was wonderful, and the owner's friendliness and excellent customer service truly impressed me. It was my birthday, and she kindly inquired about our celebration, even giving me a thoughtful little gift.

This is my Pho staple. My beloved local Vietnamese restaurant. I’ve been in the restaurant physically before and seen a roach but let it go. However this time via ordering on uber eats, I found a bug in my food. Uber refunded me for that one part of my order but unfortunately this bug issue should not be a common occurrence.

The pho has gone up to $16.50 per bowl—more expensive than in the Bay Area. The taste is mediocre. I won’t be coming back.
