Z'otz has some of the best baristas in town and the best coffee.

Personally I love Z’otz. If you are not familiar with New Orleans, the city is a bit like Amsterdam. There is a taste of everything here from formal/conservative to informal/unconservative. Z’otz is pretty far out on the latter end. The decor embodies a quirky humor, slightly morbid, very ‘alternative’. Patrons are mostly quiet studying types the half dozen or so visits I’ve made. Music is very varied, and you might discover something new. Coffee and treats are reliable, but the charm is in the bohemian feel.

Z’otz is the most down-to-earth, unpretentious, artsy, gothy, bohemian little cafe in New Orleans. Authentically eclectic and weird, it’s been a gathering place for university students, local goths, punks, nerds, artists and good weirdos of all sorts for decades now. The coffee bar is solid and the pastries are reliably yummy, but let’s be honest - you come to Z’otz because you’re a Z’otz kind of person and it’s a safe, cozy place for people like you. Couldn’t love it more.

I’ve been to this place multiple times late at night, and there’s usually a gentleman working the desk who’s been friendly. We’ve always ordered food and drinks without any issues before. However, this time, before we even sat down for five minutes, he came over twice and rudely told us to either order something or leave, even though we had already said we were planning to order. He didn’t give us a moment to settle in and was outright rude. Because of this, I won’t be coming back! The food is terrible and the drinks are trash anyway.

I've been a regular at Zotz for more years than I can count and I've never had a bad experience. The staff and the environment are the best in NOLA, their coffee is great, and its one of the only cafés you can frequent late at night. They care about their customers (if you have a spine) and you can always find someone to strike up a conversation with on the back patio. If you're looking for community and coffee, go here!

Service was extremely poor. The waiter , a short, sassy, bald-headed man with a beard was extremely rude to me. He kept pestering me to make an order even though it had already been an hour since I've arrived. He tried to say that it was policy for me to be a customer even though there was no sign stating such a rule. Very unprofessional. I just wanted to relax and chill at what used to be a favored cafe of mine. I honestly feel discriminated against and unfairly treated in the end. If it truly was a policy then there should have been a sign created to let people who are walking in know that they need to make a purchase. It's a bunch of crap. Very shameful the way I was treated.

The older lady with dark hair and bangs was rude and patronizing. All I asked for was cold foam with a little flavor added and was treated like I was asking for something unheard of! She said they only do “old school coffee” and could “try to make it.” I ended up settling for a chai with no cold foam and it was not good at all. Tasted like overly sweet milk.

Great decor and coffee but very rude barista. Such a dissapointing experience. I’m not sure if he was racist or just generally unhappy but not a pleasant welcome at all.

I usually love Z’otz! I love the atmosphere, and I love supporting the inclusive, alternative space they provide. However, for the past month I’ve had a severe double ear-infection which has rendered me practically deaf. I was already feeling so much isolation and frustration from not being able to hear for over a month. The man at the counter was incredibly rude to me when I asked him to repeat himself multiple times. I felt like crying. I am not an accurate representation of the deaf community. I am young and appear completely physically abled. I’m asking for sensitivity to disabilities, even if they are not visible, so anyone who steps in the doors of Z’otz feels respected.

Whoever was working at Z’otz on Monday, June 30th around 9 p.m. completely turned me off to this place.

I walked in, greeted the barista, and let them know I’d be right back to the counter after finding a good spot to set up. I’m in the service industry myself, so I had every intention of buying something in exchange for the Wi-Fi. I asked for water, assuming they’d grab a bottled one I could pay for. Instead, they pointed to the free water canteen. That’s on me for not making it clear I wanted to buy something.

Since I wasn’t in the mood for coffee, I left to grab some cash with the plan to just tip instead. When I returned, I explained that and asked for the Wi-Fi code. The barista ignored the question and curtly asked, “Yeah, can I get you anything?” I replied, “No, I’m already a coffee and an energy drink in, but can I just tip you instead?”

At that point, they looked irritated and said I had to buy something. They pointed to the $1 Emergen-C packs. I agreed and said I’d take one. During the transaction, they barely made eye contact. When they finally did, they said, “Yeah… it’s just a dollar,” in this flat, condescending tone, as if I should have known there wasn’t tax. I handed over the dollar, chose my receipt, and again, silence.

I still had the cash I was planning to tip with in my hand. I asked, “And the Wi-Fi code?” They pointed down to the counter and said, “There. In bright red letters.” The snark was consistent throughout. I pocketed the tip.

I fully understand if it’s store policy to require a purchase. I work in service, and I respect that. But talking to a customer like they’re dense, or like they’re trying to scam you, probably isn’t policy. It came off like they assumed I was just trying to freeload, and funny enough, the Wi-Fi didn’t even work. I ended up using my own hotspot because it kept buffering.

What could have been a simple $10 tip turned into a $1 sale and a lost customer. Pushing someone to buy something wasteful instead of accepting a generous tip isn’t just bad customer service, it’s bad math.

I’ll take my business to places with better attitudes and just as good, if not better, coffee: Rook Cafe, Baldwin and Co, Bean Gallery, and French Truck.

I LUVVVVV Z'otz! The coffee is absolutely delicious, and the fact that it's open until 11 pm is just the cherry on top. Seriously, great spot!!!! Highly recommend!!!
