we visited Boston and had to try rival bakeries! The locals say this is something people lose an eye over but modern took my heart! I had carrot cake from both while my wife had the connoli from both. Modern is definitely killing it! line was somewhat long when we were there but it was worth the wait! I cannot wait until we are back in boston!
All hours of the night the lines are long and out the door. I love pastrys but not stand in line for 30min to get a pastry. That's a pass for me.
What a great sweet treat as you walk along the Boston Freedom Trail. Lots of choices in this section of Boston. But we were encouraged to try Modern Pastry as they are fans of their fresh cannoli offerings. Yum. They were crispy outside shell. Not pre-made soggy shell. Made on the spot.
Hint. Enter the shop. Go in to the counter on the right and ask for a table. We skipped a log line for the to-go orders and we were able to sit and enjoy some amazing sweet treats and conversation too. As we left, there was o long line out the door.
Modern Pastry's take on the Hostess cupcake... Hostesss could actually take some lessons. What a scrumptious, moist and delicious version. A definite 10 out of 10.
Excellent quality Italian pastry! It’s worth the wait in line.
Customizable cannoli options are a wonderful idea!!
Modern Pastry is a North End classic—and definitely worth the visit. Their cannoli is fantastic: filled fresh to order with a crispy shell and rich, smooth ricotta filling. You can choose your shell (plain or chocolate-dipped) and even your filling flavor, which makes it feel extra personalized.
They also offer a great variety of Italian pastries, cookies, rum cake, and ricotta pie—everything we’ve tried has been delicious and made with care. It’s less flashy than some other bakeries nearby, but just as authentic (some might say even better).
The shop itself has an old-school charm, and while there’s sometimes a line, it usually moves fast.
Tip:
-You can go downstairs for table service if you’d rather sit and enjoy a coffee with your pastry.
-Cash only
If you’re in the North End and want a classic, no-fuss Italian bakery experience, Modern Pastry hits the spot.
best pastry in boston!!!
20/10 recommend! Everything we tried was delicious. Tiramisu, fresh piped canoli, Limencello, macaroons, and more! They had a small line when we went there but we didn't wait for more than ten minutes. Worth it!!
Will never go there just by reading reviews how they treat customers with disrespect, that behavior is not tolerate in Little Italy NYC Mulberry Street stop by Cafe Palermo if you in New York
Very rude interaction with an employee who was outside tonight. We had just stopped by after a wonderful dinner at Carmelina’s. We celebrated one of our daughter’s birthday tonight and decided to get some pastry. We are not new to Boston and not new to this shop. There are many choices and places to pick from and we have been coming here for years. All of our 3 children went to college in Boston and 2 of them live in the city now. Unfortunately tonight we picked Modern. To the man outside who started to call me and my family names and bully us you should be embarrassed and ashamed of yourself! You are a disgrace to the human race. You have zero class and should not be dealing with the public. 6 of us outside taking birthday pictures with our Modern pastry we just bought. As he was blocking the sidewalk with bags and bags of trash he asked us to move and said we were in his way as he was dragging more bags and blocking the sidewalk. I have never seen this here all of these years as most of the time the line is out the door with customers waiting to get in and I can’t imagine that this would be a nice thing for anyone to see. In any case we moved and he left and then we continued to take pictures. We even had a candle in a cannoli and had sung Happy Birthday to my daughter in front of the store front. I guess he wasn’t having a very good night and doesn’t care for celebrations. Now he comes flying around the corner with an attitude yelling at us to move and saying he had asked us twice to move. Mind you we are talking about a sidewalk where people walk!!! We are to move so he can continue to pile his trash from the bakery I believe next door also belonging to Modern, we have been there many times to buy the pistachio cookies. He started to elevate and raise his voice and then called us R______S! I’m sorry I can’t even type the word because it’s so inappropriate. Wow if that’s not inappropriate or ignorant or simply a lack of class or business sense then I don’t know what is. There was so much wrong with this interaction on so many levels. But it gets even better. As I reprimanded him for his lack of professionalism and the way he spoke to all of us he fled into the bakery, Modern Pastry and hid behind the pastry counter. He didn’t see me at first but as he was sharing his experience with the others inside he proceeded to call us MORONS! He had not seen me at first as I entered the bakery with my son to speak to someone about what had happened. Not an employee in sight. Just the young lady at the register straight ahead taking cash with a line mid way up the aisle. Everyone disappeared just like that. I approached the employee and told her what happened and she seemed flabbergasted when I asked to speak with someone. Her response was I don’t know why he called you that! Your shop was busy the other customers heard the dialog that continued when we came in. We turned around and left in total disbelief and disgust. We came out to celebrate my daughters birthday and the night wasn’t going to be spoiled by this rude man who for all I know is a family member or friend or someone who has been employed for years. It doesn’t matter though because our impression of Modern Pastry is no longer a good one. As a business owner having a great product and location is very important but keep in mind one miserable employee can tarnish all of that. I can confidently say I will ever step foot in there again and no longer will I say go to anyone to go to Modern it’s better than Mikes. I really hope you take this to heart and address this man’s behavior because it’s inexcusable and disgusting and repulsive.

This place is every bit as good as Mike's Pastry down the street comical what separates this is they have seating and their service is great. You have great coffee drinks and all the same pastry that Mike has and even more, this is a must try!

We recently visited Modern Pastry Shop and had such a fun time at their underground bar! The vibe was incredible—such a lively, revolving door of people coming and going, which added to the energy. It felt like a hidden gem with a fantastic atmosphere.
Sadly, we didn’t grab a pastry while we were there (rookie mistake because we’ve heard amazing things about them), but it just gives us an excuse to come back! Highly recommend checking this place out for a unique and fun experience. Can’t wait to visit again!
