As a big competitor to the OG Mike's Pastry down the block, Modern Pastry is just as good. There is a huge line inside, but it moved quickly. You build your own cannoli here instead of it being pre-made as there's a variety of options when choosing your shell, filling and toppings. I ordered a regular with vanilla custard and pistachios ($5). I enjoyed how the pistachios are in bigger chunks and the different filling options here. Overall, both Modern and Mike's are quite similar with Modern with a slight edge in my book because of their filling options, cheaper price (although smaller cannoli), and chunkier pistachios. Same, same though --to each their own. It's worth trying either one.

Great pastry . Nice atmosphere. Cool speakeasy type of bar downstairs . We came back several times.

Really popular pastry shop with lots of selection. The pastries are good (not mind blowing) and not very expensive, but the employees there gives Soup Nazi attitude. Yes, there is a line (although this time in particular was not very long, maybe 8 people) and yes it's cash only, but seriously, I ordered 3 pastries, got my cash ready, and stepped out to give others room to move. I went to sit down with some friends at a table in the shop before I realized that I didn't ask/receive any spoons to eat with. I went back to a guy near the register to ask for some. First off, I am a rather small, not very loud speaker, and there was no acknowledgement that he had even heard me. I waited to see if he would look up before I said only a second time time that ''I'm sorry, I couldn't find any spoons around, could I...' ....and before I could finish, he SNAPPED that he was busy and I had to wait with such an angry look on his face. Not what I was expecting at all from a 'warm long-standing Italian neighborhood establishment.' They really are just feeding the cash cow here and could use some reminders on basic human interaction.

We went on the night of a March Madness game, a Saturday... so needless to say, there was quite a long line. What surprised us was how fast the line moved and how many servers there were to order. It took about 15 minutes to get through a long line on the street and up to the register. Canolis were fresh, beautiful and delicious, AND we were able to sit at a table right away! Great experience for a first time out of towner. Bring cash.

Great customer service, huge selection and absolute best quality pastry in the North End. Modern's cafe and Underground seating and table service gives it a big plus over other competitors.

Visited several times while in town. Preferred it over Mike’s and Bova’s. The original cannoli and ricotta pie was amazing. And they had the best cappuccino over other places that I tried.

It took me waiting 16 minutes in line just to get an sfogliatella BUT it was so worth it. It looks like just a piece of bread but when you bite into the crunchy, flakey outside and into the ricotta interior, there's an explosion of flavors in your mouth. There is some kind of spice in the sfogliatella, too, that I could taste. I see now what the hype is all about. It made for the perfect merenda. The bakers really care about their craft. I wanted to get more stuff but turns out (I should have known this) they are cash only (no tax on the sfogliatella though). So come prepared with cash!

Cult location, delicious and mouth-watering desserts. Finally a coffee worthy of being called such. Attentive and friendly staff. During rush hour the queue is quite long. Advised!

The cashier made my chocolate cannoli and I saw her grab it bare handed and then return to handling money. I honestly didn’t know what to say I was in shock but in hindsight that was gross as

Pretty nice cannolis here! I got some mini cannolis with vanilla custard and ricotta. Both were pretty nice, though very hard for me to differentiate from other cannolis I've had (not a bad thing; I've liked the cannolis I've had around town). I think because this place has other stuff than cannolis, and because it didn't have a crazy of a line when I went (and there was seating), I might prefer this over Mike's Pastry nearby.

Cannoli is definitely their flagship product. I had the opportunity to try Mikes and Modern. I'll stick with Modern!A plus point is that one can customize the product, the dough was very crispy and the pasta was very delicious!I think the speed of service should improve, since the lines are very long! And also, they should accept other means of payment such as cards (they only accept cash)

Cannoli is a must-try dessert shop in Boston. You can customize the crust/filling/Topping you like. The crust is super crispy, the filling is plump, and the portion is very large. Paired with coffee, it is a very good breakfast or afternoon tea. The store has more than There are more than 30 kinds of delicious cakes and a lot of chocolate choices. Be sure to try them.
