Nice location, service and presentation, but the "fish" taste wasn't my favorite taste..

Char kueh teow is excellent with shrimp with tender baby squid tentacles, and very satisfying wok hei. This good is hard to find.

I finally made my way to Penang after hearing good things about it. The menu is huge and I was very excited to try the food. Overall I would say the food is good and the seafood was great, but nothing blew me away.

The roti canai was good! I really liked the texture of the roti -- thin and chewy without being heavy. The chicken curry was pretty tasty as well. I would get this again.

The chow kueh teow had really good seafood -- the shrimp and squid were tender and delicious. The noodles were not that great in comparison -- a bit gluey and quite oily.

We didn't like the beef masak lemak. The beef was not particularly tender and the sauce tasted like sweet caramelized onions? This was a miss for us.

Overall the menu has a lot of options so I'd be open to coming back. I'd try more seafood next time!

We had a great experience here! We ordered Curried Chicken with Rice and Chow Kueh Teow (this dish we asked for vegetarian and they were kind and understanding about it!) and they brought them quickly. Great food and reasonable prices for the dishes we ordered. We were surprised to see it a bit empty but overall it had a great ambiance, food, and service.

Vegetarian options: They have a "Vegetables" section in their menu and some dishes have seafood, so make sure to check with them as well as the sauces they use (if you're particular about that - the noodles are made in oyster sauce by default but they removed it when we asked)

We ate there last Sunday, thought the chicken ( Hainanese Chicken ) was hard, I asked the server to change it and she does, but the 2nd plate was still hard but we ate it anyway I don’t want to be so rude to return it again, yesterday morning before we travel back to New Jersey my daughter got diarrhea and not feeling well until now, this is the first time she got sick because of food. We love Malaysian food, we always go to Penang in New york, we don’t get sick. Please cook your chicken well.

I used to go to their other location when they had it in Harvard Square, back in 2001. Place has a great atmosphere!

One of my all-time go to favorite places in Boston to share a delicious meal and enjoy a nice walk after dinner (close to Public Gardens, Theater District, Downtown and Back Bay).
The menu has soo many great choices and offers classics like roti and beef rendang.
Everything is made fresh and the flavors are absolutely devine.
Servers are friendly, attentive and helpful.
If you're in Boston and love good Malaysian food or want to try it for the first time, Penang is the place to go.

Both a negative and positive food experience. I hope I can help the restaurant with this.
I ordered the rambutan drink, Sambal Shrimp and the Penang Satay Chicken.

The rambutan drink had rambutan in the bottom and tasted like it. For my taste buds it was too sweet. But in Malaysia drinks like these can be just as sweet, so it was legit.

The Sambal Shrimp disappointed me a lot. It should be sold as ‘Chinese Sweet Shrimp’ and it will do exactly what it says and people will get what they order. But that’s not what it’s called.
First, there was an abundance of onions, so much that I started to leave the onions on the side of my plate and I gathered the size of a whole new onion. The other 30% of the food existed of shrimps and green peppers.
So then the sauce. Which shouldn’t be sauce in the first place. It should be sambal. It was just a (very) sweet sauce. There was no actual sambal or sambal flavor to be found.
I don’t want to be evil by saying this, I want to help the restaurant to reconsider or rename this dish.

Luckily I ordered the Penang Satay Chicken after this, and this is where my expectation was met. The skewers looked (and tasted) like actual Malaysian chicken satay skewers and the peanut sauce was delicious. Compared to the ‘Sambal’ shrimp, this tasted actually Malaysian. People will be happy with this dish and I definitely recommend it. The amount of skewers were generous!

The absolute friendliness of the staff and the Penang Satay chicken saved me from staying away, and the latter made me curious for the other dishes like the Kang Kung Belacan and the Beef Rendang. But next time I will avoid the disappointing dish.

We ordered duck casserole. It was hard to eat since it had a lot of bones. The crab rangoon was good. The food wasn’t our favorite but it might be yours.

Penang has an amazing interior and is a very comfortable place to eat. The service and food is great! I love the Roti and Pad Thai. Chopsticks are give but as I remember you can request silverware.

Vegetarian options: My vegetarian favorite here is the Buddhist Yam Pot which I highly recommend.

Jun was the best waitress with her pretty smile and genuine attentiveness. The Roti Canai was pretty good and a good deal. The Laksa was quite different to say the least: cucumber, pineapple, and fish in a noodle soup, so it wasn’t my favorite, but I can’t really blame the kitchen. The Bubur Cha Cha for dessert was very comforting. Finally bathrooms are very clean. Since this is one if not the only Malaysian restaurant in Boston, it is a must try.
