How this place has 4.7 stars is beyond me…. Horrible food.
Oh Somenya~
Saturday night was my first time dining in. Line got out the door quickly by 5:30! But I love how the hostess took down me and my friend’s names the second we got inside, rather than keeping us guessing for the wait time.❤️ Fortunately there was a table of two available shortly after and we got to skip a few bigger groups ahead of us.
Inside there is a beautiful ambiance and it felt so cozy! We were quickly given glasses of water and menus at our table.
We started off with their Hiya Yakko Japanese Cold Tofu. So delicious and perfect size for two. I highly recommend the Beef Sukiyaki with Soba Noodles! My friend got their Curry Beef Udon. Both were DELICIOUS and the perfect hot temperature for a rainy day in Boston.
Would I come back? Yes!?
Thank you Somenya waitstaff and kitchen for your hard word and hospitality.???

Food is fantastic, don’t miss this gem!
So so good! Plus everyone was so nice!
I had the beef sukiyaki with soba noodles at this place and I must say it’s one of the best dishes I’ve ever tasted. The broth was incredibly rich with meat and caramelized onions and also a little kick. The soba noodles seemed homemade and cooked to perfection. Excellent service and nice ambiance. Highly recommended.

Picked up take out, I'll definitely sit in next time! The ambiance is very cute.
I ordered online and the food was ready in 15 minutes. The beef sukiyaki rice bowl was delicious. I put gluten sensitivity in the note when ordering and didn't experience any symptoms after. Would definitely come back!

Nice atmosphere, clean restroom, polite efficient waitresses. Food was delicious. The duck was cooked perfectly. The soba is delicious. You can get better in Japan but they were the best I had in the US.

Good food and quick service! The scallop sashimi was very fresh, she I like how the fried chicken was not greasy at all.

This was my first time having udon, but fairly confident it’s the best udon in Chinatown. Vibe is immaculate. Amazing tofu option. No notes.
Vegetarian options: Only couple veggie options (it’s a small menu), but the tofu is deliciously prepared.

Solid option for Japanese soba and udon in Chinatown.
For a while, casual Japanese dining options in Downtown Boston and Chinatown have been scarce—aside from Tora. That’s where Somenya steps in, filling a much-needed gap. Instead of ramen, which Chinatown already has in abundance, Somenya focuses on udon and soba, which I personally find more appealing for a regular, go-to meal.
So far, I’ve tried three of their noodle dishes—Beef Sukiyaki, Mixed Vegetable Tempura Soba, and the Ikura Uni Soba—and all have been solid. Cold soba bowls tend to have a light broth, so the flavors are subtle, meaning the toppings really take center stage. While the classic yuzu sauce paired with seafood was great, I found the crunch of the mixed tempura to be more enjoyable. On the other hand, hot udon bowls like the Beef Sukiyaki pack more flavor, and this one didn’t disappoint.
With most of the top Japanese noodle spots clustered around Fenway and Brookline, Somenya is a great addition to the area. It may not be the first place that comes to mind when people head to Chinatown, but if you're craving solid, casual Japanese fare without the long waits, Somenya is definitely worth a visit.

Ordered a cold spicy beef soba.
The amount of soba and beef is reasonable. The cold sauce is well seasoned.
The tempura is very chewy even though I ate it right away when it was served, which made the dish a bit unsatisfied as you are missing that crunch you want.
The service was good and so does the atmosphere.
The price was on the mid-high end in the sense that there are cheaper options (other restaurants) available with the same or higher quality.
Overall, this is an okay place to come for soba. I would recommend come try it once; it won't ruin your night :)
