Tried the ‘Bell in hand ale’. Good flavors of dark chocolate. It is such a historic place.
Take a moment to read the historical marker outside the door!
The only time to doors have closed was during the prohibition!
If you like beer or history, you have to check it out!

No prices on the drink menu is always a fun gamble. As of 10/24/25 the 12 oz of cider/beer is $8. Not too crazy considering the area and history of the bar.

Bell in hand was mine and my husbands first food stop in Boston when we arrived. Max was our server and he was so kind and welcoming that we came back 2 days later to grab a drink and hang out. He remembered us and gave us exceptional customer service. The food was so good and the atmosphere was fun and inviting. I highly recommend Bell in Hand and requesting Max as your server. Thank you for a fantastic Boston experience.

the people's favorite: Located in the heart of Boston, just a stone’s throw from Faneuil Hall, The Bell in Hand Tavern is more than just a lively watering hole; it’s a spot where the city’s past and present seamlessly collide. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, it’s hard to ignore the deep historical roots this bar stands upon—literally. Its location on High Street puts it in the very shadows of the Freedom Trail, with landmarks like the Old State House and the site of the Boston Massacre nearby.

Awesome spot, great food, great service. I really enjoyed grabbing a beer and fish and chips here.
p.s., I don't understand why people rave about this place and only give it 4 stars -- that's not how reviews are supposed to work.

I've always wanted to stop in and finally did. Its claims to be the country's oldest continously operated tavern. Walking felt like and old tyme bar as it definitely had a bit of a colonial feel to it. It has a small menu. I got the fish and chips on the bar tenders recommendation. It did not disappoint, though the portion was on the small side. But honestly, I went there for the history. I did see someone order the pretzels as an app. Those did look spectacular! All and all, its worth a visit if you are in the area.

I had the best experience due to Liv, the girl with the pretty purple hair. She was so kind and charismatic.

Can't beat having a pint in the country's oldest pub. 10/10 would do it again
