We went to this place with our two kids and were able to find a table pretty quickly. The atmosphere was AMAZING! It’s a bar/grill, nothing fancy beyond the history of the place which is what makes is awesome! The food was great, we didn’t have any issues. The drinks were fantastic and just what we needed. The server and bartender even made a warm drink for our kids when we asked. Everyone was great and we were thrilled to visit! Will be making a stop again when we are back in the area!

This bar was built in 1993. They just named it after a historic bar for tourism dollars. It's not actually the same historic bar.
Go across the street to the Bell in Hand. It has a better atmosphere, and it's the oldest continuously operating tavern. Service was much quicker, and they also have better clam chowder at the Bell in Hand.
This tavern is no more than a tourist trap with made up history.

Place was empty but service took forever and the staff seemed uninterested to be there.

With a claim on the oldest pub in Boston this is a lively and friendly place to visit.

Look no further. I’m serious. This cover band? One of the best I’ve ever seen. Vibes? Cozy. Staff? Pro. Lively energy yet not obnoxiously overcrowded. Might be one of the gems of the US. Find out for yourself.

One of the coolest places in Boston! Walking in was list stepping back in time - you could see the history all around you. So much to look at, read, and take in! We sat at the bar and the bartender was super friendly and gave great food and drink recommendations. It was neat talking to someone from Ireland and reading about the rich Irish history in Boston. We can't wait to come back, and will tell everyone we know to visit. Try the Shepherd's pie with a pint of Guinness!

Before I say anything else: JUSTIN is the best bartender in Boston. Period.

I’ve been in this city for days getting hit with cold shoulders and even colder vibes… and then I walked into this bar and met Justin — the man who single-handedly redeemed the entire Boston hospitality scene in under five minutes.

From the moment he opened his mouth, his personality hit like a warm hug and a free therapy session. This guy doesn’t just pour drinks — he creates an experience. He’s enthusiastic, hilarious, insanely skilled, and somehow makes every single person at the bar feel like a VIP.

The drinks? The best we’ve had in Boston. Perfectly balanced, creative, and way too easy to drink.

And LOOK at the photo I posted — Justin mid-shake like he’s summoning cocktail gods. The focus! The finesse! The lineup of drinks waiting like they’re backstage before a sold-out show. That’s a man who loves what he does, and it shows.

If every bartender in Boston had even a fraction of Justin’s passion and energy, this city would be unstoppable.

Do yourself a favor:
Sit at Justin’s bar. Let him take care of you. Let him fix whatever Boston broke.

Honestly, Boston should give this man a medal — or a statue.

My most recent visit was the week of November 13. I had visited prior with my sister in April and couldn’t wait to take my husband! This time I personally had the bangers and mash (my husband had the fish and chips that I’d tried previously) and everything was amazing! We also had the chowder fries (I wasn’t sure what to expect from those) and I couldn’t stop nibbling! Our server was attentive and helpful (even recommending their old fashioned which was very well made) and the food was hot and fresh and tasty. The sausage was cooked to perfection and remained soft with a light skin and the mashed potatoes had a meaty flavor without sacrificing texture or relying on the gravy to pull the weight! I’m not always the biggest bean fan, but even those won me over! I can’t wait to be back in Boston again to try something new on the menu!

The atmosphere was great and the place seems pretty busy. Tables are available in a reasonable period of time. The food was tasty and fresh. The service was ok, but they took more than the usual time to get the order.
