I heard that this was one of those "cool" places to go, but I was not impressed. I ordered a burger ($35) and a side salad. The burger came out with fries which I did not want. They did bring a salad after I asked where it was, but the lettuce was in fair condition--not super fresh. Another member of my group ordered a chicken dish with fingerling potatoes. They forgot the potatoes and said they would bring some out. The potatoes didn't come until we were finished eating. We were not offered an apology or a discount on our food for the messed up orders. It may be a posh place, but definitely not worth it for food.

Wheelchair accessibility: Although there is an elevator to take you down a few steps, we were seated in an area that had additional steps and no way for a person in a wheelchair to access the location unless they were lifted down the stairs.

I stayed at this hotel last weekend and whenever I tried to get into this bar in the evening, I was not treated as a welcome guest.

The first evening I was told to take a seat in the "library," which is supposed to be a guests only space. I was NEVER waited on. I finally left and tried to come back in later and was told to stand by the bar. I was never asked by the male bartender there if I even wanted a drink. I saw a small open table that I wished to take and tried to get the attention of a waiter to see if I could be seated and he just rudely walked by in silence. I only managed to get a seat after returning again to the host outside the bar and asking if I could be seated. It was such a highly unpleasant experience that I just had one drink and left.

The second night I didn't even bother to try to get a drink or food as I knew it would be an unpleasant endeavor.

I was able to eat here and have cocktails only in the late afternoon. The female bartender was exceptionally nice (the only one who was) and her drinks were great. The food was mediocre and had slipped since I ate here more than a hear ago.

I will never return and I am quite sure the management doesn't care, but at least I will avoid being treated like dirt at other Boston eatablishments.

I find myself feeling quite disappointed because of the exceptionally poor management of every aspect surrounding my visit; it was all too clear that there was a significant lack of understanding when it came to the principles of customer care. I sat for an excessively prolonged period, waiting for my drink, and it soon became evident that there was a blatant disregard for the needs and experiences of the customers in general.

absolutely horrific experience like others have said the host is rude but when I say rude, I don’t just mean rude. I mean, obnoxiously hatefully rude I will make a point to never recommend the Newbury, Contessa or anything to do with this group from now on I’ve always been treated perfectly well over at raffles and that’s what I’ll recommend in the future. I refuse to give business to people who think treating people badly is acceptable.

I was there last night grabbing a drink before meeting up with some friends. I walked into the bar and it was full; I asked the bartender if anyone was closing out soon and he said no. No problem, I stood and ordered a drink. A white patron next to me told me two young gentleman at the end of the bar were closing out so I moved over there to ask them if that was true.

They said it wasn’t but we chatted further about some other things until the bartender rudely interrupted and “berated” me for “killing” the vibe by asking the two gentleman. I apologized because I actually have manners and told him I was misinformed. I later sat down & I apologized again to which he responded with “I just didn’t want you to go down the line and ask everyone” and I said that was not my intention. He quipped back that he had stopped me before I asked everyone at the bar if they’re closing out soon.

Okay weird, whatever. A lady was having a glass of wine I found intriguing and I asked for it, mind you, in front of me was my first drink. He tells me I need to finish that before he’ll get me something different – I tell him to just dump my cocktail and get me my wine. I’ve never had any bartender care about my drinks; much less when I walk in sober.

The level of unprofessionalism displayed in a matter of 30-40 minutes by the bartender was appalling. I am a young black woman & I was alone, I honestly felt like he was being a douche to me because of my race & age. I still over tipped his ignorant ass but such a disappointing encounter in a bar that would have otherwise been wonderful.

The host who is at the door was absolutely rude. We were there and it was too busy to be seated and he was really off putting to the people ahead of us we left and went back the next day and again he was unnecessarily unpleasant.
We had cocktails and ice cream Sundays for the kids. All were ok. The waitress was very polite and helpful. We left her a great tip. But the host was giving the hairy eyeball and even sighed rudely when we were leaving.
That host should really reconsider his position if he wants to continue with that attitude it’s not pleasant.

We were asked if we wanted sparkling or tap water.... After 15 minutes we received no water nor was our order taken so we left. If you want to pay for overpriced drinks this is probably your jam.

I came for drinks for my wife’s birthday. Service was probably some of the worst I’ve ever seen - the host was outright rude and laughed in our face when we asked if there were any open tables (this place does not take reservations in advance). Service was slow, continually rude and food portion sizes were completely unacceptable given the price. I could’ve forgiven extremely expensive cocktails and food if the staff wasn’t only rude, but just openly hostile. Needless to say, will not be back.

Do you like getting ripped off? Paying $30-40 per cocktail? Potentially roofied? Then this is the spot! Had an incorrect menu online, prices were insane, there are so many other places to throw money at, this is not one of them.

Very nice atmosphere, very good service the cocktails are excellent however the food is really disappointing and not worthy of this establishment the beef tartare comes alone without any accompaniments.
Go there and have a cocktail and have dinner elsewhere!

Long wait time (more than 1 hour), rude staff, underwhelming food. Rudest manager and hostess in Boston - this place makes Karen’s diner look polite. I have never encountered such rude, unprofessional staff. We were told the wait would be 30 minutes but ended up sitting around for over an hour. Had I not constantly gone up to the hostess and practically begged for a table, we probably would have waited another hour.

My friend stood outside waiting (there’s a sign that says wait outside), hoping to be greeted by someone. When she walked in to check, the manager aggressively told her to “get out.” Astonishingly, minutes later, a couple strolls in, and I step inside to see if they’d be treated the same. No surprise—the manager doesn’t say a word to them. When I pointed this out, he comes up to me with an attitude, repeating, “the table needs more time” as if that was ever an excuse for his rude behavior. Unbelievable.

After waiting over an hour, the manager and hostess tried to seat us with another couple at the same table because they “didn’t have space.” There were multiple empty tables around which could easily sit 2. What kind of proper restaurant does this? Absolutely ridiculous.

We were finally given a table in the library area, which had zero atmosphere—might as well have been sitting in a storage room. But just minutes later, they came over and told us to get up because the table was “for hotel guests only.” The service here is a literal joke. We finally got seated after all that waiting, and then told to move to another table? Who in their right mind runs a restaurant like this? Unbelievable.

As for the food? The burger, hyped up as a local favorite, was underwhelming (6/10). It was downright mediocre at best. The club sandwich? A nauseating 3/10—the turkey smelled like fish and the ingredients tasted like they’d been sitting out for days. And the fries? Extremely salty. You’d need a whole glass of water just to survive the salt attack.

Avoid this place unless you want to deal with absolute chaos and complete incompetence.
If you want to experience complete disrespect and mediocre underwhelming food, then this is your place. If i could rate it zero I would.
