Sushi was good, we really enjoyed the Newbury Roll and the Dragon Roll (pictured). Service was slow and the place was really tightly packed. We ordered the edamame and got a tiny portion… half of what you would expect a normal portion to be, wouldn’t get again. Good sushi, recommend those bento boxes that seemed to be a much better value for your money.

This is a staple must go restaurant for my sisters and I everytime we visit Boston. (We're from NYC) Their sushi quality is super fresh and their Baked Alaska Tuna Maki is absolutely amazing -- super buttery melt in your mouth quality. I always order that one, witht the Butterfly Maki and one new to try everytime (This year I tried the Prudential which was excellent). We've been here once every year for the past 8 years and the quality is still the same as we remember it each time. Staff is friendly and welcoming. They've had structural interior renovations within the past 8 years and the atmosphere is very homey. I crave for their sushi when I'm back at home in NY -- I haven't found this quality at this price. I highly recommend!

Great food! The atmosphere could be more related to Japanese culture. But nice and tasty food for the prices.

Great food and okayish service. I ordered veggie tempura and a Newbury Maki. The tempura was the best I’ve had in awhile with Umai putting a variety of veggies in the appetizer. The Newbury Maki was good, a decent size, rice nicely cooked, and the whole thing tasted good. Loved the play with textures from the tempura pieces, salmon, avocado, and small roe.I was surprised miso nor a small salad was served after I ordered, but maybe those are only given alongside bigger entrees, like bentos.Service was a bit slow when I visited in the late evening (not too many customers). When I was brought the Toast machine to pay and tip, the waitress stood next to the machine watching how much I tipped, which seemed a little off to me. I’ve found most waiters will turn their heads when customers decide on a tip or aim the machine more towards the customer, so having the waitress stare down at the machine felt somewhat rude to me.Overall, Umai was good for my first experience. I’d probably visit again only after trying a handful of other sushi places in the Boston area.

We ordered the dragon roll and the spicy salmon roll, as well as the gyu don bowl. Sushi was good, but didn't blow me away, and I thought that the price was a little high for the quality, but it's newbury street so I get it. Gyudon was flavorful and pretty in presentation. Would come back again!

Bright cozy interior and delicious, authentic food. We went for dinner after a conference and it was a perfect place to relax and hang out after a tiring day. I had the boneless chicken plate and my friend had the eel rice dish, both very good and served nice and hot. The miso soup was exceptionally flavored well. So many choices on Newberry so was happy with this surprise find.

This is a cute place on Newbury Street, which should be a caution sign to the budget gourmet. Always in search of the highest quality-per-dollar experience, we didn't find it here.We ordered sushi-sashimi combo. The maki is teeny, and there was no miso soup or green salad included, as one usually encounters (and expects) in quality sushi restaurants. The food isn't bad - but it's aggressively tourist-priced on a tourist markup street, and the lack of soup and/or salad lent an aura of stinginess to the experience. There are many great Japanese restaurants in Boston, one of them not far away on Boylston Street with prices 20-30% lower. The rents must be crazy high on Newbury Street. If you've got the time to trek out to Porter, or even Cambridge Street in Beacon Hill, you'll get home with a bit more of your salary intact.

Exceptional Japanese food. We're in Boston for a conference staying in Copley. The service is quick for lunch, not crowded. Food was fast and perfectly flavored, not too expensive. We really enjoyed the experience and hope to go back again tomorrow! The bento was spectacular. Great find in the heart of Boston.

Absolutely love coming to this place! I come probably 3x a week and I have never had a bad experience. The prices are right and the fish is fresh. The lunch bentos are really good and their filet mignon bento is great as well. I usually order the Chirashi don which is enough food for me. Highly recommend coming here as a go to sushi restaurant

Good authentic Japanese food.Menu has a lot of options, but that might not help when you have a doubt and you can't barely understand what the waiter says.Still worth to eat over there.
