We were a party of two and stopped in to Painted Burro for a quick bite on the way to a show. We both really enjoyed the food,. ambiance and service. The menu was fab and we found it hard to choose as there were so many possibilities! Including a great Margherita menu!
I really can't say enough about the lovely experience I had bringing my son to a pre-theater dinner at Painted Burro. We arrived a few minutes after our 6pm reservation and told them we had a 7pm show and they were so accommodating. The drinks (diablo margarita for me, mango mocktail for him) were delicious, excellent warm chips and salsa, and my tacos were great (especially the shrimp). The staff even made a simple off menu burrito for my little guy which he loved and I really appreciated. They also checked in on us to make sure everything was just right and brought the check quickly when we needed to get going. Got to our show ontime and we will go back for more tacos soon :)
Phenomenal food and incredibly kind and welcoming staff members! Perfectly located in Harvard Square and excellent for any kind of dining- from casual, to work get togethers- to family gatherings. 10 stars!
Delicious dinner! I miss Border Cafe, but this is the next best alternative. The Happy Hour deal is amazing. And I dream about those nachos.
menu was limited, food was bland/uninteresting, server was disinterested (but other servers refilled water promptly).
It was our first time. The food was ok but very expensive for what you get. We were there for an hour and were asked to leave for the next party. It was interesting as we saw a larger party that arrived at the same time we did but was not asked to leave. Needless to say we won't be going back There are plenty of other options in the area.
The tacos are small and $10 a piece — which is very expensive for the tiny portion you're getting. Queso was great though!
It was OK. Tapas style bottomless orders on Sunday until 3 o'clock, which wasn't obvious when reserving. $29 for adults, $12 kids. Food was just OK. Service was great.
We regret sitting at the bar, as there were often times no staff around for 15-20 min at a time. The fajitas were excellent, as we're the bourbon cocktails!!
Love this spot! Team is nice, food is solid. Only take away Not sure why burritos are not on the menu, considering the name?!
Restaurantji Recommends
I went into The Painted Burrow with my husband because we wanted to have a margarita, and we thought it would be a good place to go. We sat down at the bar, and my husband said, “I’m interested in a margarita.” The bartender replied, “Yeah, we’ve got a lot of them,” then kind of tossed the menus at us and walked away, like maybe we’d offended him by craving tequila.
When my husband asked for a recommendation again, the bartender suggested the house margarita. It was okay—I honestly can’t even remember why it wasn’t better. The whole experience just felt pretty underwhelming. Plus, it took forever to get the check.
For comparison’s sake, we walked across the street to Source and asked the bartender there if he could make us a margarita. The contrast was wild: He wanted to talk about our preferences! He asked what we liked in a margarita! He actually seemed excited about making us a drink! And, not surprisingly, he made us some fantastic margaritas. It was an excellent experience.
So, contrary to what you might think, if you’re looking for a margarita on Church Street, don’t go to The Painted Burrow. Go across the street to Source. They have a much better bar program and a bartender who actually cares and wants you to get a drink you enjoy.

The brunch menu is unique and everything tasted amazing. The all-you-can eat brunch is a great way to sample their delicious offerings
Bottomless brunch was pretty good ($29). Just know service can be slow between each order!

Ridiculous prices. I was charged $10 for a tiny taco smaller than my hand. Looks like they just reheat frozen food, as my chicken was cold. The restaurant also had an off-putting smell you could expect at a public bathroom (not sure why that was). Table service was very lacking and waiters seemed to disappear. Truly unfortunate experience to have come here.
