Dined here several days ago-extremely disappointed-they were out of shrimp and olives for appetizers and the chicken I ordered was a small meager leg that along with the mashed potatoes tasted like leftovers warmed up-the wine we asked for was $18 a glass(highway robbery) and the man at the entrance was unkempt and surly-I think they are in real trouble and would not recommend this place to anyone.

This was our first visit to Great Barrington and we were excited to eat at The Elm. The atmosphere was great and the staff were lovely. They were already out of fresh pasta which was disappointing but not a deal breaker because the other items on the menu sounded amazing. They were also out of the beer we had wanted on tap. We had oysters which were absolutely delicious! I had the gorgonzola burger and my husband had the cheddar burger. They looked fantastic but had so much salt they were almost inedible. Same with the fries. It was really disappointing, especially for the $30 price tag. Our friend had the steak with chimichurri. The steak was perfectly cooked but salty and the chimichurri was bland. Overall a less than stellar experience. Perhaps this was an off night or the regular chef was on vacation but I would not go back.

I went to The Elm thinking I would get some good quality food there . Oh boy was I wrong I order the Shrimp Scampi and for a high end restaurant you would think that it would be decent food it would wasn’t . The service from the bar tender was great and very welcoming . The food on the other hand wasn’t cooked well and tasted like a pack of Lipton noodles and some shrimp that came out the microwave .. not high end at all . The mirrors on the bar are smeared and not clean at all .. would recommend going somewhere else for food but the drinks was great .

DEEPLY DISAPPOINTING EXPERIENCE
I rarely leave negative reviews, but our experience at The Elm in Great Barrington was unacceptable from start to finish. They ran out of multiple menu items—a serious issue for a restaurant claiming to be high-end. Even worse, they charged full price for substitutions and modifications, as if we were being accommodated rather than inconvenienced.
We waited nearly two hours for our food, with zero communication or apology from the staff. Not once did anyone acknowledge the delays or offer to make things right. For a place that presents itself as refined, the service was shockingly indifferent and the hospitality non-existent.
Avoid unless you enjoy overpaying for what they might still have in the kitchen, and being treated like an afterthought while doing it.

Staff was very nice & professional. Menu suggestions are fine but be prepared for small servings and poor quality. Salads are small and little taste, entrees overpriced with super small portions.

I was in this restaurant because I’m new to the area and trying to find good spots to eat and have a good time. I decided to try out the elm and while I was there I witnessed something that turned me off of this place for good. I saw a customer having a horrible allergic reaction and trying to calmly explain to the manager whose name I think is Andre or something that someone had cross contaminated something because she has nut and seafood allergies and that’s the only time she reacts like that. That manager stood there arguing with the lady about it and telling here she was wrong. When she was just calmly explaining that she was telling him only to make him aware that someone was not doing something right for allergies and she thought he would want to know. Then he told her to get out!!! He kicked her out for insisting that something was cross contaminated and a hazard. It was a disgraceful display and as someone who has been in the restaurant business for 15+ years I cannot in good faith trust that this business is not going to make someone (myself included) ill at some point.

I came to have drinks, upon my first drink as someone with horrible allergies to shellfish and nuts i came to have a horrible reaction “face swollen (visibly) lips swollen (visibly) . I have a nut and shellfish allergy both have been made aware to the staff. I immediately swell , lips, eyes shut and then upon asking the staff what could have been the cross contamination I was kicked out because I was asking questions and ASKING QUESTIONS TO THE APPARENT MANAGER ABOUT HOW I could have been cross contiminated and the response was you can leave my bar because I had questions and concerns on what and how I was being served AS I WAS HAVING A VISIBLE ALLERGIC reaction and all they cared about was getting me out of their restaurant.

Was previously quite nice and rather high end. It’s clearly fallen off. No Jamon, more limited menu, lackluster service. Place seems to have lost its focus. Salmon without sides (no couscous?? It’s on the menu? Don’t serve just salmon and chard and look confused that there’s no starch on the plate). $5 bread service of focaccia that’s obviously just cut bread with butter? Borderline insulting.

Restaurantji Recommends
We walked in place was empty and we had a large party of 11. 40+ seats maybe 1 party of 4 sitting. 6 at the bar. The bartender maybe the owner came over and was very, very, very unfriendly. My older aunt he cut off and said" if you are done talking and listen to me I'll tell you what to do" in an extremely condescending tone and attitude. If my 15 year old neice wasn't so upset at not eating by this time, we would have walked away. We were all pretty upset. But we sat and ate, the menu was limited. The waitress was pleasant and timely. The food was fine. Can't recommend because of captain attitude in the knitted cap, he really just ruined the experience. clearly, he wanted bar patrons not food patrons. If 9 people can see that you are acting like an ass maybe you should try the kitchen and stay out of the public facing part of the business.

We shared the clams in a broth and it was so good that I wanted to drink the broth from the bowl when we finished the clams. I had the duck and it was perfectly made. My wife had the halibut and loved it. Our server, Lindsey, was amazing. She was friendly and attentive. We enjoyed everything about our meal.

They somehow managed to combine the friendliness of a local pub with the food of a fine restaurant. Highly recommend this gem. Havent tried the pizza place nectdoor but the wood fired oven makes pizza that looks delicious. I am a beer drinker but the cocktails look great! No, its not cheap but qhat is these days?
