This is probably the one local Chinese place that has a history you need to know before diving into reviews. If all you want to know is, "is the food delicious?", the answer is yes. No need to read further, order here. This hole in the wall place used to be owned by a very family oriented owner and staff who were exceptionally charming to be around. They were extremely pleasant, remembering people who were regulars' orders just by hearing your voice on the phone. When the ownership changed, you'll start to see a shift in the reviews. The old timers like me start becoming negative while people who didn't realize the change never complain. I genuinely believe that this is because the change removed that intimate friendliness the old owners had. That doesn't mean these new owners can't build rapport with us locals, but the old owners had been established as favorites, them being gone hurts a lot of us and I think that's where a lot of negativity comes from. The food is great. They updated the menu as well and now we're starting to see more traditional Chinese dishes appearing like Sesame Cold Noodles (Chinese owners! We WANT to try real Chinese food! Please translate your secret menus!!)What's more this is still the ONLY Chinese place that understands what I mean when I say, "extra spicy please".Give these guys a chance. They're not the old owners, and that's ok. They can be our "new" old favorite place. They just need a little more time to work their way into the hearts of the old time locals.

Appears to have new management or owners within the past few months. All the long time people are gone. It's really disappointing now. They use to be one of the best in New Bedford area but my last order was expensive, reduced sizing container, and the flavor was lackluster.

My wife and I love Chinese food particularly from this place. I know they're all similar but the food from here doesn't seem excessively drenched in their sauces and the crab Rangoons are awesome.

Our family has been loyal customer of this restaurant for 30 year. It was always fresh and TASTY. It has recently been taken over new owners. The quality of the food isn't as good or as tasty. Have tried multiple times and very disappointed. It was my favorite place for so many dishes. Now to find a new restaurant to order from.

We moved to the Southcoast (Fairhaven MA) last year from Washington DC. We've tried so many Chinese restaurants in the area and couldn't find any that were to our taste. Finally we tried Golden Star and our search has ended. The flavors are consistently good and they have Hunan and Kung Pao (which they call Kung Bo) -- styles of food that most restaurants in the area don't serve. And the ones that serve it, well, it just isn't up to snuff. When we'd travel back to the DC area, we'd get Chinese takeout and bring it home in a cooler. No more: we've finally found a really good Chinese restaurant here with Golden Star. It's just a little over ten minutes to drive there from Fairhaven. Gold Star is just half a block off the King's Highway exit from 140. On one hand, it's a bit of a drive from Fairhaven (since I'm driving past numerous other Chinese restaurants to get there!). But they're so close to the exit for 140 that it's really quick to get there and back. My sister loves their hot and sour soup and the cold sesame noodles. I love their Hunan Shrimp best of all.

We moved to Fairhaven from the Washington DC area. The Chinese food around us hasn't been to our taste. We've tried nearly ten different places for takeout and every time, the food has been disappointing. I always gave my sister my leftovers the next day. But with Golden Star, it's a different story. Their flavors are spot-on. Tasty and delicious. And my poor sister only has her own leftovers now. I'm eating every last scrap of food. They're about four miles away (which was nothing when I lived in the DC area but it feels like it's far away around here!). But I get onto 140 and they're located *very* close to the exit. It takes about ten minutes to get there from Fairhaven Center. Oh! One more thing. After having tried so many other places, we had an assortment of similar-looking but ever-so-slightly-different-sized plastic takeout containers. Those are all gone and we're only saving the containers and lids from Godlen Star now. We have found our "home" for Chinese food.

We got takeout from Golden Star once a week for many many years. My husband would call and the lady knew our order by heart. I couldn’t understand why the food all of a sudden was horrible. I remember they had closed for a week, which they sometimes did, but I guess it changed ownership. We tried it maybe 4 times not realizing what was happening but it was just awful. I am very sad about it bc I always looked forward to my weekly Chinese food. It’s so disappointing! Kam’s is okay but their Crab Rangoons are completely different and the chicken fingers have a thicker batter. I just don’t know where to go now! Beyond upsetting!!

New Bedford is a desert when it comes to having good Chinese food places but this place is the oasis in that desertAfter reading some reviews I want to note I miss the lady at the counter, she was loud, but prob had to be, glad the new owners kept things consistent at least with what we order
