The Captain's Table and TakeAway is an expensive but worthwhile dining experience, now enhanced by Chef Jordan Bailey's exciting new menu that combines classic favorites with impressive new dishes. The staff is friendly and helpful, creating a homely atmosphere with low ceilings and muted conversations across the dining area. The squid salad remains a particular favorite, while the garlic bread is really buttery, but the plentiful garlic makes up for it. Some customers have found the breaded croquettes less appealing. The service can be slow, and there aren't many large tables, which can contribute to occasional noise. The Maryland crab cakes and fish dishes are excellent, and the seafood fra diavolo does not lack punch and spice. However, the New England clam chowder has been described as bland and gummy. The sea scallops with two sides were amazing, although the rice pilaf was a bit too hard. The Boston cream pie and chocolate cake were decent but too sweet and likely not made in-house. The restaurant is BYOB, and while the prices are fair, the establishment remains popular for a reason, despite service challenges during busy periods. Overall, the food is straightforward but well-prepared, making it a hidden gem worth checking out.
