great place for a sweet snack or decadent birthday cake.
The selection of cakes and pastries is phenomenal. At first blush the choices are overwhelming but there is clearly something for everyone. Superlative baking and attention to detail. If you want fine pastry it's a must do.
I recently placed a large order at Black Rose Bakery in Westborough, MA to celebrate my husband’s 57th birthday with over 250 guests. From start to finish, the experience was frustrating, unprofessional, and disappointing.
When I first called to ask if they could make a carrot cake without raisins or currants due to my husband’s allergy, the woman I spoke to—who I believe is the owner, Ms. Long—was dismissive, rude, and unaccommodating. Her response was a sharp “No, we make large batches,” followed by a rushed end to the call. I’ve never encountered a bakery unwilling to make such a simple adjustment, especially for an allergy.
Despite that red flag, I still placed a sizable order:
• One 10-inch red velvet cake
• One 7-inch lemon cake
• 14 cupcakes
• Several individual round cheesecakes
• 6 mini cupcakes
• Additional standard mini cupcakes
The total came to nearly $300—yet no one could give me a clear price breakdown in advance. I was told I’d receive the total only at pickup. That’s completely unacceptable for any professional bakery. Even our wedding cake, with all the extras, came with a detailed quote upfront. This lack of transparency left me feeling misled and disrespected.
To make matters worse, the staff was untrained and unhelpful, echoing the same unprofessional tone I received from Ms. Long. At one point she told me, “If price is the issue, we can work within your budget.” At no time did I mention being concerned about cost—I wanted clarity, accuracy, and good customer service, none of which I received.
I shared this experience with neighbors who had originally recommended Black Rose, and they were shocked. One even apologized on the bakery’s behalf, saying she had always been given an estimate upfront and never experienced that kind of treatment. Sadly, I can’t say the same.
And finally—the cakes themselves were a huge disappointment:
• The red velvet cake was dry
• The lemon cake fell apart when cut
• The cheesecakes collapsed—despite being refrigerated until the last minute
• The only items that held up were the mini cupcakes, and even those weren’t particularly good
With over 250 guests, it was embarrassing to present desserts that fell apart or lacked flavor. I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience was so poor that I felt it was necessary to warn others. As a Senior Vice President in a major organization and the wife of an executive, I expect a certain level of professionalism—and this bakery missed the mark entirely.
I do not recommend Black Rose Bakery. They need serious improvement in customer service, staff training, transparency in pricing, and the quality of their products.
There are many other bakeries out there that will treat your event—and your money—with the respect it deserves.
I bought a cake on occasion while driving home. The cake turned out to be exceptional. Unlike other bakeries this one was sweet just right. Thank you!
This place initially was really good, but now the pastry is not nearly to the same standards that it used to be. The sfogliatelle on a Sunday morning or stale.
Huge selection of decadent pastries. Everything we tried was delicious. Highly recommended
I’ve been going to the black rose since it was another owner. They have a rewards program that is very difficult to use. Today i was there and bought about $40 in yummies. I didn’t put my telephone number in the system before I put my credit card. By the way the IPad system doesn’t suggest you do so to get your rewards. I completed the transaction and asked about my rewards points. The clerk said because I didn’t put the number in the beginning I wouldn’t get the rewards. I asked her to void the transaction so we could start over. She said she couldn’t do it, I became a Karen and asked for her to check with her manager, still no help. This isn’t the first time this has happened. It is just an example of incompetence. I’ll be going to Yummy Mummy from now on.
The lady who took the order for my son’s birthday cake was very rude. She took the order like she was doing some favor to us. The cake that we received we spent around $270 and the cake was designed not up to the standards and when we cut the cake it fell off immediately. We got the cake from the bakery around 10am and cut the cake around 12:00 pm and it didn’t stay put. You couldn’t even make the perfect pieces to serve the people. Never going back to this bakery.

First time here, great selection. Gingerbread cookies, super yummy! Mini carrot cup cake, cream cheese frosting was really good. Lemon truffle was very lemony, but my friend was not thrilled with the intside texture. Service was on point, super friendly, helpful and engaging.

Purchased a birthday cake from here tasted and looked amazing! Friendly staff!
Amazing!! Top shelf quality. Fresh and lots of choices. I'm not aware of anything comparable from here to Boston. They also made a specialty birthday cake for my son and it was perfect. He loved it! 🥰

My husband and I both ordered cheesecakes here around 2:00/3:00 PM, and were up at 2:00 AM with food poisoning. My husband’s cheesecake had an egg shell in it. It’s the only shared item we both ate in our day.
I went here tonight 10/16/2024 and got my things to go. When I got back to the hotel I noticed the glass jar my crème caramel was in had a plastic film residue on top like it was store bought prepackaged and they just put it out on their shelf..a quick Google search and these are DEFINITELY from Costco (called Marie Morin Caramel Flan at Costco) then I noticed it expired 2 days ago. My friend got the chocolate mousse in a jar and it REEKED like it was old, too!
