I’ve been eating at Sushi Ya for over 20 years. Almost weekly! I’ve stayed loyal through ownership changes, through Covid, through countless takeout orders and family dinners. The previous owner even knew me by name and always made my family feel appreciated.
That’s why what happened on Friday was so disappointing. I picked up my usual order and noticed when I got home that the soy sauce had been forgotten. I called to let them know, not to complain, but simply because it was missing. Instead of a quick apology, the owner told me he’d refund me and that I should never order from them again because I had “complained before.”
I was honestly shocked. My entire family eats at Sushi Ya. Multiple households, all regular customers. My family alone spends about $100 a week here. To be spoken to that way after decades of loyalty was incredibly upsetting.
It breaks my heart to even write this because we have truly loved Sushi Ya for so many years, but no customer, let alone one who has supported a business for decades should ever be treated this way. I hope the owner reflects on how he speaks to the people who keep his business running!

The entire staff was incredibly hospitable to my family and accommodating of food allergies. The food was unique, fresh and extremely appetizing.

Went here as an alternative to A+ Sushi being fully booked and needing a reservation. The appetizer green beans were not it. We kinda all spit it out when we couldn’t swallow it (pause). Food was decent and able to be finished (except for the beans). Service was very calm and attended to our needs greatly. Atmosphere is very quiet and the place is also just a little bit dark. Overall, it was okay same with prices they’re okay too.

Delicious sushi. Fair price.
Had a very good experience at this sushi restaurant. The interior and atmosphere of the place was very pleasant and relaxing. Service was great and friendly.
Ordered a few dishes as well as a miso soup not shown in this review. The dragon roll was extremely filling and packed with flavour. The miso soup could’ve been better, it tasted very diluted, they seemed to be skimping on the amount of miso paste used in it. Perhaps changing their ratio would fix that issue quite easily.
Overall, I enjoyed the experience and would try their other menu items. I always order miso soup as a starter so hopefully the next time I visit the owners would’ve seen this review and improve that to make it an even better meal.

One of my favourite sushi places.
A few times we have arrived to see them unexpectedly closed, or taking cash only. The food though, is always good!
Staff are nice, food is good :) I read the reviews before going here and I saw one said it was child friendly. I did not expect that they will offer my baby free avocado and cucumbers ♡ It was well appreciated as my son really likes cucumbers!

I absolutely adore Sushi ya. I haven’t lived in Winnipeg for 10 years but always make a point to come here when I visit. I think this sushi spot is better than most in Toronto. Sushi ya forever!!!!

Food was great especially for the price, you get a lot for what you pay for.
Service was eh, only came to take orders and drop food off. Never checked on anyone, took forever for the bill. A lot of us had to stand up and come to a waiter to get our bills. Shouldn’t be a problem when there’s only 8 tables and 2 servers

If you’re a sushi lover or even just sushi-curious, Sushi Ya is an absolute gem that deserves a spot at the top of your list. From the time you walk in, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming.
The fish is fresh and can taste the quality in every bite. The balance of flavours, textures, and presentation shows the chef’s dedication to the craft.
Service was equally impressive-attentive but never intrusive. The staff is knowledgeable, happy to explain dishes, and offered great recommendations.
Can’t wait to return.

They’re generous with food on the house, but don’t expect too much — the flavor’s kind of meh.

One of the great sushi restaurants in Winnipeg. The staff is very friendly and dedicated. Salmon is fresh, the rolls are also very delicious. I tried Danzzan Danzzan roll, very quality and excellent. I had a good experience here.

Over all? Highly recommend
Always on the hunt for new sushi places, it seemed only logical to try this one, and I was not let down.
The prices are incredibly fair. Single rolls will run you slightly below market average, while a platter gets you an even lower price - hard to argue with.
The rolls were all freshly made, good ingredients, and rolled incredibly well.
The atmosphere was fantastic, with chatter and music, as well as decor that suits the place perfectly. The staff were very friendly and professional as well.
If you’re on the fence about trying it - don’t be!
