Food was tasty, service was good. Prices were market place or a little above. I'm sure there are better breakfast options out there. The atmosphere and decor is interesting. If you are curious, it is worth a visit.
If you aren’t a regular at this diner, don’t waste your time or money.
We just moved over to Cambridge about two months ago and have been looking for new restaurants to try.
Nothing was out of the ordinary at first. Yes, the restaurant is small so it can be a little awkward moving around.
We were a party of 5 and since the place is quite small, they put us in a 4 seater booth and then put a chair in one side. They did have a larger table in the back but they were holding it for some regulars. Most of the customers were regulars and you could tell from how they interacted and from their familiar conversations.
One of those regulars was an elderly gentleman who used a walker. When he came in, of course we moved so that he could get through- no questions asked.
After a while the waitress brought us our food and we ate. The food was nice and hot, and tasted quite nice. After the waitress brought us our food, that was the last time she willingly interacted with us.
At one point she stopped by and took a few empty plates away and asked if we wanted any dessert. Off on her way she went again.
It started to get a bit awkward as even after we finished our meal, no one ever came over to us to give us our checks. Checks plural, because we had told the waitress when we first ordered our food that we need seperate checks- to which she said was fine. Nothing else mentioned.
As we’re sitting there waiting for our checks, we were talking amongst ourselves. We figured hey, they’re busy, they’ll bring our checks over once they have a spare moment. We’re not in a rush.
During the time we spent chatting and waiting for our checks, the older gentleman with the walker finished his meal and was leaving. Next thing we know, the waitress is coming up to us and telling us “You NEED to move so he can get out”.
Whoa there. No, “Hi, excuse me, would you mind moving” or anything of the sort. She jumped straight to “You NEED to move”.
They were already annoyed with us for being there for so long and it was starting to show.
Of course we moved for him, like we did when he came in. We had no problem doing so, and we told the waitress that if she just gave us our checks, we would be out of their hair completely- to which we were told “We don’t do checks. You just go up and pay.”
Oh. Well that would have been nice to know. There were multiple instances where that could’ve been brought to our attention- when we first got there, when we asked for separate checks when ordering, while sitting there waiting after we were done.
As we go up to pay, the waitress mixed up the two bills. Not the end of the world. We let them know, and as we were working to correct it, the waitress ringing us up had an attitude.
“Well you’ve been here for so long I got them mixed up. It happens.”
“I’m sorry but we told our waitress that we wanted separate checks when we ordered.”
“We don’t do checks here and you ordered so long ago. It happens.”
So, as for the childish response the owner left to one of our reviews:
1-Yes, we did move for the gentleman with the walker. God forbid we don’t have eyes on the sides of our head to see when he was coming.
2- If you’re going to be nasty about new customers not knowing your procedures, maybe your waitresses should make an effort to explain how the process goes. We would’ve left a lot sooner if we knew to just go up and pay. But alas, they were too busy chatting it up with their regulars to care for new customers.
3-Your waitress was not tipped because she had a nasty attitude. Seems like she learned it from you.
