⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ — Delicious German food at Rathskeller!

Recently, my wife and I attended the Baltimore Christmas Market, and afterwards we found ourselves craving German food. A quick Google search led us to The Rathskeller in Elkridge, just outside of Baltimore, and we decided to give it a try. As someone who has lived in Germany for a total of five years and absolutely loves German cuisine, I’m always excited (and cautiously optimistic) when I come across a German restaurant that looks promising.

The Rathskeller embraces the traditional concept of a Keller—a cellar-style tavern—and that atmosphere is immediately apparent when you arrive. The restaurant is located downstairs, giving it that cozy, old-world beer hall feel, while also offering additional seating upstairs when things get busy. The menu is clearly German-inspired, with schnitzels, sausages, pretzels, and other classic dishes, and the beer list is impressive, featuring a solid selection of German beers. I didn’t opt for any drinks this time since I was driving, so I can’t personally speak to the beer, but beer lovers would definitely feel at home here.

Let’s talk service—because this is where The Rathskeller really shines. When we entered the Keller, we were greeted right away with warm smiles and a friendly, welcoming attitude. Since it was busy, we were seated upstairs, and at first it almost felt like we might be forgotten because there was only one other couple up there. That concern quickly disappeared. Our waiter was extremely attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. Our glasses were never empty, and he was always nearby to answer questions or check in. He was an absolute rockstar!

We even shared a lighthearted moment when I asked for a Dr Pepper and learned they don’t carry it. Our waiter joked that he’s been trying to convince them to add it because so many people ask for it. I had to agree—adding Dr Pepper to the soda menu would be a great move. Because of that, I opted for water instead, but again, the service itself was top-notch.

Whenever I visit a German restaurant, my baseline meal is always Jägerschnitzel with Spätzle and a side of fries. Fun fact: this was the very first meal I ever had when I moved to Germany, and it quickly became my favorite. I lived in both Hessen and Bavaria, so I’ve had my fair share of authentic versions. While I understand this restaurant is in America and not Germany—so a direct comparison wouldn’t be fair—I still judge it based on execution and respect for the dish.

Overall, The Rathskeller did a solid job. I opted for the chicken schnitzel, and it was cooked well—juicy, flavorful, and nicely breaded. The Jäger sauce and Spätzle were both okay. Not bad by any means, but they could use a bit more refinement and attention to really elevate them. That said, the dish as a whole was enjoyable, and I was genuinely impressed with the effort and overall quality.

In the end, this is a good place that we truly enjoyed. The atmosphere is inviting, the service is excellent, and the food delivers a satisfying German experience. If we’re ever in the area again and craving German food, The Rathskeller will absolutely be on our list to revisit. And hopefully next time… there will be Dr Pepper on the menu! 😄

Got in to town and a buddy asked me, 'German food, thoughts?' I replied say less, and boy did this place not disappoint.

The only downside to this night out was the atmosphere. We sat upstairs which they had not finished fixing up so it was not authentic feeling like downstairs, and it was a little cramped BUT the food, and the service were great.

I look forward to going back again and again.

Thank you Mario for being so kind to our family. First time at Rathskeller and not our last! Such delicious food and service. We also appreciate the elevator for our mom who can no longer do stairs. Small place so recommend reservations. Prost!
