Staff are always friendly and the atmosphere is nice, but the food can be a bit hit-or-miss (and thus mediocre). I’ve had almost everything on the menu at this point - the pork tacos are delicious, but the chili is best avoided
Great spot! Great people making great BBQ!
Two Meats, Pulled Pork Sandwich and sauce is THE boss.
Definitely coming back.

Outstanding! I am up here for work from Florida, and as many times as I have been to Frederick, I can't believe I have not eaten here sooner. The atmosphere is wonderful! There is nothing better than the smell of smoked BBQ filling the air. Ample parking, and I love the location. The food is fantastic! I had the potato salad, sweet potatoes, and 2 meats (Arkansas Brisket which are burnt tips and Hot Links). The platter comes with pickled onions, pickles, and cornbread. It did not disappoint. Plus the original BBQ which comes with it, had an interesting flavor. Sweet and vinegary, with a little heat, which was nice. Highly recommend this place for anyone looking for some good BBQ.
found this food very good but overpriced.Spent$60 on lunch for 2? Charged extra for fries as a side for my platter Every place I've ever been too a platter is the item with fries.Should have been told this ahead of time. The place was only 1/2 full at lunch.Go figure.
Service was good. Nice and accommodating. The atmosphere was fine. Nothing special but you aren't in a BBQ place for atmosphere. The brisket was bad. Dry. Bark had no bite to it. Fat cap wasn't trimmed or at least looked like it. The sauces weren't very good either. The burt ends where just cubed meat. Way too much sauce. Couldn't taste the meat. The Mac and cheese was average. I don't like it dry. The brown sugar sweet potatoes were fine. I've been avoiding the place for years. Was in the area just wanting some BBQ. It just reminded me why I avoid it.
We had a very enjoyable lunch, six people ordered different items. The food was excellent along with the service. We'll definitely be back.
A coworker recommended this place to us so we decided to try it. The food is really good. The portions are just right, not too large (though I would have loved to take home some leftovers). I got the Arkansas brisket which was very tasty. The burnt ends were a little chewy but the flavor was fantastic. The sides were okay but if we go again will pick different ones than beans/rice and collard greens. Big bonus for this place is that it is in downtown Frederick with it's own parking lot so you do not have to search or pay for parking.

The Black Hog is a good choice for all things smoked. We enjoyed a burnt ends platter with Mac and cheese, cole slaw and candied sweet potatoes. The pulled pork sandwich and creamy Mac and cheese was especially good. Quick service, close to the Canal and the Visitor's Center. Carryout available, too.
I usually have had a good experience here, they have excellent food! unfortunately their bartenders don’t know how to check ids. i recently turned 21 so i understand why they are cautious but to turn away a loyal paying customer with a valid id is absurd to me. the bartender then asked if i had anything else with my name on it… thats even more illegal! a photo id is the requirement correct? not my problem they got busted a few weeks ago serving without carding. maybe invest in a scanner!
We are from Texas and just stumbled into this place. Legitimate Texas brisket. Sides were very good as well. My wife had the turkey and said it was very good as well. She said the sweet potatoes were the best she ever had. Staff was very welcoming and friendly. Very nice place with clean restrooms. Outstanding visit!!
