Food was great
LOVE LOVE LOVE the rocking boat swinging booths outside on the pier, shoots the ambiance thru the roof! The food here is still the same as it was 30+ years ago when I left, IMMACULENT! FRESH SEAFOOD COOKED TO PERFECTION! I grew up going to Captain Johns and I'm so thankful it's still standing and serving some of the best Seafood in all of Southern Maryland! 🫶💃

Old school vibe family crabhouse. Great crab cake sandwich, Maryland style crab soup, crab ball appetizer and fried oysters. Reasonable prices and good value. The service was a tad slow and inattentive, but we did drop in on a busy Sunday afternoon. Lots of after church goers getting a late lunch. They offer a full bar with wine and beer. The atmosphere is noisy, the decor is dated - but this is part of its charm and the waterfront location was easy to tie up at (we boated in). This is not a fancy place but a great, solid seafood restaurant. We will definitely go back.
Crabs were excellent.

The cream of crab was terrible. It was more like mayo with no crab. I'll say there was some deception in the seafood orders concerning sizes of crabs and shrimp.

I don't know what the restaurant service or atmosphere is like because we did Carry out...but if those are anything like the food then those categories would also receive the negative 10 stars that the food deserves. Its getting a 1 star because that's as low as Google has to give.
I don't write reviews unless a place is unbelievably amazing or unbelievably awful. And I really don't like to leave bad reviews.
Every single item we ordered...and we ordered most of the menu including meat items....was the most disgusting version of that food on the planet. I have had hospital food better then this place.
Napkins have more flavor then any of the seafood.
Quite possibly the worst food I've had in my 45 years of life.
However we did not order crabs. Maybe that's the only thing that's good here. But definitely never going to take the risk to try given how awful everything else was.

I went to capt Johns on 8-16-25, got a bushel of #1 crabs to go, i drove about hour and half coming from richmond, it was well worth the drive, the crabs was huge and meaty and seasoned perfect, i will never buy crabs in virginia ever again, no comparison, thanks so much Capt Johns, we are going back in about 3 weeks to eat in, about 25 of us are going, i done already spread the word on this wonderful restaurant! If you want big meaty crabs, this is the place to go,also beautiful view on the water.

Really outdated place. Every booth had dirty tables and I had to ask a worker to clean a table off for us. They weren't busy maybe 3 tables eating. Someone not keeping up. The flounder sandwich literally was sad looking placed on 2 pieces of white bread. Crab dip $20 tasted of heavy mayo, flounder sandwich $15, one dozen colossal crabs and colossal priced $145. The 2 pieces of corn didn't come out until we were done eating crabs. The only nice thing here was the view and the crabs tasted good even though slightly overcooked-one was mushy...the rest tasted great. I didn't care for the pepper salt seasoning they use-old bay would have been better. Sad they have a prime location and let it go and need improving on the food and prices are just ridiculous. I can get cheaper colossal crabs in Central VA that were crabbed that morning and brought in lol...
We visited last Friday (7/25/25) for the all-you-can-eat crabs, and unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. Most of the crabs were extremely light weight with very little meat, and the shells were thin and fragile—clear signs that they had recently molted. We only made it through one round before deciding it wasn't worth continuing. A complete waste of $100. This was my first visit, and it will be my last.
