This place used to be so much better. Took the longest time to get food on a nearly empty restaurant. Sandwich took 30 min and was cold inside mind you it’s $25. I’m familiar with the place been coming on and off for 10/15 years. Made a special visit this am for their soup since I don’t live in the are anymore and always wait graciously I don’t complaint. But today was the last time I visit this establishment.

2024:I ran into a hiccup with one of the clerks taking orders, and I'm intentionally not going into details because I do not believe the interaction I had with that employee was commonplace for this business, and I'm willing to also say it *may* not have been common for that employee, as well. a
Because of the wonderful reviews and my craving for a corned beef sandwich with lingering memmories of the best salted beef sandwich I had in London 6.5 years ago (!!), I elected to let the customers behind me get served until I could get assistance from another employee. The next person who worked on my order was friendly, explained the potential reason for the hiccup with the other and apologized. Wow! Off to a fabulous fresh start! Turns out, the gentleman who assisted me the second time was the owner Lou! He was friendly, knowledgeable, professional, patient, and had an extremely positive attitude.
The food is amazing! I had the corned beef special with the perfectly cooked crispy wedged fries and flavorfull pickles from the pickle bar! Oh and the raisin kugel! Yummy. I also had some small rolled cookies that Lou said were homemade, and they were delicious.
The atmosphere is what you would expect for a deli. It was clean, organized in its layout, and welcoming, with no frills.
Highly recommend this business - it worked out well in the end!

Dreadfully slow. Ordered a burger and Mac n cheese. Went to pick up after a half hour and still waited a half hour.

TL;DR Food is good. Wait was extensive and they were out of a lot.
Go in line to order and then wait until your name is called to pay. (This was not explained to us, so we waited in line, then waited in line to pay, then were told to wait)
- Turkey triple decker: husband loved it, stacked meat
- Half pastrami sandwich: delicious, very large. Would not need a full
- Pastrami & egg on bagel: good, suggest adding a sauce or cheese
- Fries: seasoned spears, very good
- Sweet potato fries: terrible, soggy. Perhaps not cooked fully
The issues:
- After waiting 35 minutes for a takeout order, I was told they didn’t have everything bagels, so I had to choose another
- After another 5 minutes, I was told they don’t have potato pancakes which was one of the reasons we came. They let us choose fries instead which were supposed to be an upsell. The spears were fantastic and sweet potato fries were awful, so maybe that evens out.
If the wait weren’t so long, I’d be curious to come back for the matzah ball soup and desserts, but I’m left with such frustration, I won’t be going back.
Suggestions:
- telling takeout guests before they order that the wait will be 40+ minutes
- acknowledge the wait to the guests waiting, better yet, give them a water cup or a cookie

I went there with my husband and we split the Jewish cheesesteak which was terrible. The brisket was dry and other add ons were tasteless. Also got onion rings which were pretty good. Not worth the wait and the cost.

Take a look at that chicken pot pie in the case. A huge mound covered with a tempting looking crust.
We took one home for dinner.
Heating instructions were vague. We started at 375° for 22 minutes. Cold.
Ok. 400° for another 8 minutes.
At this point, we scooped a portion onto a plate and zapped it for a minute. Mm. Finally.
What a disappointment!
The chicken was dry, the pie was dry.
Some peas, carrots s few string beans. Some potatoes. Lots of dry shredded chicken breast. And a less than so so crust.
Some spices would have helped.
Something juicy/creamy would have been a big improvement.
I hope everything else we bought, we spent about $140, is better.
Trying to find a way to doctor up the left overs.
Sorry Essen. You need to up your game on chicken pot pie.

Food os awesome and very large portions. It is so busy, service is a little slow because everyone serves tables, and works the deli counter. It is not too slow and it all adds to the atmosphere! Don't forget to try the pickle bar!

I was happy to find The Essen Room when looking to a place for lunch in the area. It reminded me of other similar delis and it definitely lived up to the comparison and even better that they had an included pickle bar. Service was quick and friendly. The price of the whole sandwiches felt like NYC pricing, not Baltimore suburb strip mall. Yes you can get halves and yes they are huge. Even a basket of frozen fries/potato wedges was $9.99. Pricing was a bit excessive and my sister’s hot pastrami sandwich was fatty and not great for the price. 2.99% cc fee so I paid cash which I never do. I would go again but now I know to expect higher pricing than I thought.

Delicious food, excellent service, fantastic pickle bar, and convenient location near I-695 and Reistertoen Road.
We ordered soups for the office. Three of us ordered a $10 pint of Chicken Noodle soup. It was mostly broth (water!). After I drank most of the broth, all that was left of the chicken and noodles was just enough for 5 spoonful's (see attached picture). Definitely not worth the $10 price, and I am still hungry.

If you’re looking for a top notch Jewish deli, The Essen Room will deliver and some!
They have a variety of sandwiches and combinations of meats you can stack to create your own if you. They also have a selection of sides as well as dessert! The best part if you are a pickle lover, that they have a pickle bar that you can get as many pickles as you want if you’re dining in. They have a range of half hours to hot pickles as well as two pickled tomatoes. If you’re carrying out, you can purchase a bag to grab as many pickles as you want. The only thing I was not a big fan of was their coddies as upon biting in to it the texture was very offputting as it seemed like it was more filler than it was actual cod.
Inside the restaurant, there are many tables available but ideal for smaller groups between 2 to 4 . We stopped in for carryout around noon and it was fairly packed so I would plan to get here a little bit earlier or after the lunch rush.

I've been visiting this place for years, but I've never written a review. The restaurant itself isn't a glamorous spot, but the staff are friendly people and so is the food (including desserts). I usually get the Reuben Burger, which consists of two hamburger patties, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, Russian dressing & your choice of corned beef, pastrami, or brisket on grilled rye bread. If you dine in, you get a wide selection of all-you-can-eat pickles as well. I definitely recommend you give them a try.
