We were in Castine and after reviewing eateries on TripAdvisor we decided on Markel's. We were not disappointed with our order of a ruben sandwich and the lox platter which was equally split. Everything was tasty and well prepared. Definitely a place to stop in for lunch.
Only visited once, but the food was delicious and the staff very friendly. Loved the outdoor seating.
Great lobster rolls and the best onion rings I've ever had.
Amazing flavors! Everything we had from sandwiches to salads was delicious, fresh, and full of flavor. Great variety!
This is a great place to have breakfast or lunch. PLENTY of seating inside and outside. Good views of the harbor from the outdoor patio. It is centrally located. Gourmet sandwiches and my personal favorite is the turkey, cranberry, brie on a baguette. Lots of pastries to choose from. Huge drink selection. Can't go wrong here.
I have visited Markel's about six times in the last month. I've enjoyed both lunch and breakfast at this popular local spot. Everything here is cooked to perfection. Hearty sandwiches, creative quiche, generous salads, delectable baked goods...all prepared with care and creativity. Regular fare and specials are all on the chalkboard. Today's delight was an omelet: light, fluffy and filled with tasty mushrooms, cheddar and a generous portion of fresh spinach. My partner had his favorite go-to, Eggs Benedict with traditional Canadian bacon. If you like, they offer the dish with lox. You can't leave without trying the sweets. Goodies are self service from the cupboard. It's hard to choose, but you won't be disappointed with any choice you make. And freshly brewed coffee tops it off. Seating is indoors or out on the deck. And it's just a short walk from both inns on Main Street.
We stopped in Castine as a surprise for my father-in-law who read a book about the historical nature of the town and really wanted to visit. We had actually planned to eat at Otter’s on the waterfront, but they were closed, although the website had said open. Starving, we just made it to Markel’s before their closing at 2pm. So perfect! So many DELICIOUS salads, gluten free options, beer, wine, outdoor seating, great service-exactly what we needed! Don’t miss the Rueben sandwich or the Kale-Kielbasa salad, Beet salad was awesome, as were the deviled eggs with a slight horseradish taste! So great! Would absolutely go back!
For a spring break vacation to celebrate a birthday we went to Castine and ordered a Peanut Butter Pie ahead of time. We picked it up with a variety of side dishes. ALL of the food was out of this world. We had Meatloaf, Halibut cakes, Mac and cheese, jalapeño popper potato skins, quiche, and jasmine rice. We couldn’t believe we just randomly found this place. Someone in Mar-Kels can cook. We had the Peanut butter pie for dessert. If you do that dessert be prepared for peanut butter heaven. Make sure you have some milk around. An amazing find in Castine!!
A friendly and delicious stop in Castine: excellent coffee and fine pastries. Plus they're great people: we arrived after closing and they still welcomed us warmly. Well worth a stop!
Great food - from take out dinners and baked goods to full dining facilities. Very careful as to Covid guidelines. Friendly service.

Wonderful food. Exceptionally friendly staff. Can't say enough about this little gem!
We had been having a very hard time finding a bakery or caterer that was near where we were holding our intimate backyard wedding in Orland, but I was so glad I remembered MarKel's was close by. We visited MarKel's a few years ago for lunch and it was delicious, so I reached out and was excited to see that they have an extensive catering menu.Kelly was incredible to work with and helped me make decisions (via email and phone, as I was out-of-state) regarding our cake and farewell brunch. The cake was delicious and exactly what I had asked for- a simple two-tiered naked iced cake. The almond cake was fabulous as well as their carrot cake, but they can really do just about any flavor you'd like. Our farewell brunch was also fantastic: a bagel bar with all the fixings, corned beef hash, assorted quiches, sausage, bacon, and mimosas and bloody marys– yum! Delivery was prompt and super easy, I would highly recommend them to cater any event you are hosting. If you go in, make sure to sit on the patio on a nice day!
I ordered the fish cake and a side of cucumber salad. the fish cake is delicious. they have an outdoor patio dining.
Great food! Check it out! You won't leave hungry.
