I stayed in room 7 at The Pentagoet for 4 nights in mid-October. Room 7 is the BEST! The bed is so comfortable and the view is outstanding! In my hubris, I went to bed with the blinds open and woke up to the most AMAZING sunrise over the ocean, however, as it rose higher it became blinding.. but it was worth it.
The room got cool at night and I LOVED it. I think it helped me sleep so cozy. I didn't notice a thermometer so I'm not sure if there's a way to change the temperature in the room (it has an old steam radiator). There is a heat fan in the bathroom that I appreciated when I took my shower, it really warmed the bathroom up.
The inn itself is really lovely. The food at the restaurant was fantastic. Matt, one of the owners, was so friendly and helpful. The art and decor was beautiful and fitting for the historic hotel. I appreciated the convivial nature of the pub before dinner. I met and conversed with several lovely individuals both locals and guests.

This review is waaaay overdue, but this place is so special and deserves every star I can give it and more.
My sister, cousin, and I stayed at the Pentagoet Inn in June and boy was it memorable, in the best possible way. We absolutely fell in love with Matt and George; it's damn near impossible not to! They carry such pride for the Inn and they should, because it's a precious jewel.
I cannot understate how perfect the stay was. The beds, the food, the decor, the view, obviously Matt and George...everything was just...correct. The featured while we were there contained lilac straight from their garden and it was SO GOOD. They could've wheeled in a keg with that drink and I would've kicked it. The dessert was a chocolate tart and I can't believe I managed to get a picture of it before we inhaled it. They allowed us to use a table in the dining room to play cards, talked with us like we've been friends forever, and even brought us champagne while we played...I mean, seriously.
No offense to any other reviewers who complained about the stairs--and I'll try not to be rude--but, what did you expect??? It's a 3 floor building, are they supposed to magic you upstairs?
I wish I could write a review that would do them justice, but that's a fool's errand.
Thank you, Matt and George, for sharing your beloved gem and we can't wait to come back! XOXOXO

Returning to Castine for the first time since the sale of our family home, I was prepared for a somewhat bittersweet experience. But our stay at The Pentagoet erased all that, it was both a comfort and an inspiration. The innkeepers (just since 2022!) have revived a true historic seaside hotel, (think EM Forster meets EB White), while authentically rooting themselves and their establishment in the community as family. It is quite a thing. The wraparound porch and return of the original porch staircase to the street is an unmistakable hallmark of welcome and hospitality. The art and interior design, much of which is bespoke, handmade, and custom, is delightful. The hotel staff (owners, manager, cooks, and servers) were warm, lovely to chat with, and genuine. It was also obvious the sense of family extends to everyone. Dinner was outstanding, the lobster pot pie which I suspected would be a one-bite-and-that's-enough sort of thing, managed to be light, subtly spicy, and was served with a tangle of tartly dressed local mustard greens. The smoked trout pate with preserved lemon was standout, and I hope the crab cakes never leave the menu. The room we stayed in had wonderful character, but never sacrificed comfort. My only hesitation now is to be so honest in my review that I jeopardize our ability to think of The Pentagoet as our little secret. This is the kind of hotel that should be (at least) an annual pilgrimage on everyone's list.

An absolutely charming, charismatic and delicious restaurant. Early 1900's charm with a modern twist. Exceptional food, exceptional service. The pianist was wonderful: melodic, note perfect and much too good to dissolve into the background... Just lovely :)

Castine is a lovely town and we’ were enthusiastically looking forward to the Pentagoat. We reserved Room 2 with a king bed only to be switched to room 7 with a queen bed. To be fair they called to let us know the day before but neglected to give us any info on the differences. Instead of the second floor, room 7 is on the third floor accessible by narrow stairs. Tough climb with suitcases and no offer of help for 70+ year olds. When checking in, Matt was more interested in seating early diners than helping us out. Had dinner in the dining room…food ok. We were charged for items we did not order. Here’s the best…when leaving, Matt asked if we had a good time. I asked if he wanted some honest feedback or not. He thought for a moment and said “I think I’ll take “not”. He turned and walked away. All I wanted to get our food bill sorted out. In 40+ years of travel I’ve never met a host who didn’t want feedback. This feels more like a restaurant with rooms than an inviting inn with hosts/owners who care about guest experience.
Food and drinks: Pub cocktails are well done

Amazing service from the start, as we were greeted by the owners and shown around. Comfortable and cozy accommodations with an awesome view overlooking the docks and river. Great coffee service and breakfast each morning to fuel up for adventuring nearby. Truly delightful dinner in the Mister's Pub (the shrimp scampi was easily one of the best I've ever had). Lovely experience all around. Will definitely be returning again soon!!!

Matt and George have been doing a GREAT job in bringing life back to this Castine, Maine, historic INN . With a prestigious building ,easy location, fine dining restaurant and bar, it continues to be a prime choice when visiting Castine. The rooms are classic with antique finishes and includes a lovely buffet breakfast each morning.
The owner's continue to invest in the property, performing updates and participating in local events that make the locals and guests want to support this historic gem.

The Pentagoet Inn is exactly what you're looking for on a coastal Maine getaway. My husband and I stayed here for three nights in August and had the most relaxing unwind beyond what I had imagined. From the view of a MMA Alumni, Matt and George have taken the history and nautical background of Castine and brought it to life in an elegant and magical home away from home. Can't wait to get back on another trip!
Food and drinks: The food and drinks were phenomenal. Breakfast each morning was delicious and the coffee right near the rooms was such a perfect touch. The dinner menu hit the spot with a blend of Maine classics and excellent wine (we had the Lobster Pot Pie and Pan-Seared Cod). To top it off, the cocktails in Mister's Pub hit the spot for a nightcap.
Noteworthy details: Matt and George we're so personable and available. While running a packed inn, they still were able to slow time down and have quaint and thoughtful conversation each day. Their energy and leadership trickled down into the rest of the crew at Pentagoet, as all the employees were just as sweet and thoughtful throughout our stay.

We went to eat & hear the pianist. Good food. Interesting menu. Service excellent. Pianist terrific! Atmosphere is wonderful New England old world. Love the owners who came and talked to us, seated us & served us. This is exceptional cuisine.
Food and drinks: Great selection. Service impeccable. Food and drink all top-notch.
Noteworthy details: Photos, art, curios, mementos and decor all done in period tastefully. Makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time to a 19th century United States just realizing its immense wealth, prosperity & possibilities.

My friend and I stayed at the Pentagoet Inn for two nights during a recent long weekend girls' trip to Maine. We had high expectations going in from the reviews and Instagram. Even with those high expectations, we were not disappointed! In contrast, this charming b&b and it's delightful owners exceeded our hopes. Upon arrival, we were welcomed by Matt and given a tour and history of the Inn. We stayed in Perkins House (we originally selected the Pentagoet because it was one of the few b&bs we found offering a room with 2 beds) and the restored 1800's inn was everything we wanted - cozy, well-decorated, and equipped with modern amenities like a 24-hour coffee bar, incredible freshly brewed coffee in the morning, breakfast buffet, etc.
We visited the bar on Friday night and had dinner on the porch on Saturday - both 10/10 experiences and we feel so lucky to have been able to chat with both Matt and George during our dinner.
We've already recommended the Pentagoet Inn to friends, I want to return with my husband, and I'm positive it will be one of our most special girls' trip memories for years to come. Cannot say enough good things; everything was fabulous.
Food & drinks: Dinner was phenomenal from start (oysters and kale salads) to finish (Maine Blueberry and Peach Cobbler). The freshly brewed coffee in the morning was perfect.

My husband and I were recently guests at the Pentagoet Inn and Pub. If we can give it more than 5 stars we would! Our room was comfortable and tastefully decorated. The Inn has been restored to its original, historical grandness of the mid 1800's.
George and Matt, the Innkeepers, make sure you are treated like family. The entire atmosphere takes you back to a simpler time. It is so relaxing. The beautiful antiques and decor is breathtakingly gorgeous. The breakfast and dinner menus are exquisite. George and Matt have created delicious entrees and deserts. Their attention to detail is evident in everything they do.
If you are traveling to Maine, you must visit this charming, historical gem. You may come as strangers, but you'll leave as family.
We will definitely be back!
