We were in Castine and after reviewing eateries on TripAdvisor we decided on Markel's. We were not disappointed with our order of a ruben sandwich and the lox platter which was equally split. Everything was tasty and well prepared. Definitely a place to stop in for lunch.
We stopped in Castine as a surprise for my father-in-law who read a book about the historical nature of the town and really wanted to visit. We had actually planned to eat at Otter’s on the waterfront, but they were closed, although the website had said open. Starving, we just made it to Markel’s before their closing at 2pm. So perfect! So many DELICIOUS salads, gluten free options, beer, wine, outdoor seating, great service-exactly what we needed! Don’t miss the Rueben sandwich or the Kale-Kielbasa salad, Beet salad was awesome, as were the deviled eggs with a slight horseradish taste! So great! Would absolutely go back!
For a spring break vacation to celebrate a birthday we went to Castine and ordered a Peanut Butter Pie ahead of time. We picked it up with a variety of side dishes. ALL of the food was out of this world. We had Meatloaf, Halibut cakes, Mac and cheese, jalapeño popper potato skins, quiche, and jasmine rice. We couldn’t believe we just randomly found this place. Someone in Mar-Kels can cook. We had the Peanut butter pie for dessert. If you do that dessert be prepared for peanut butter heaven. Make sure you have some milk around. An amazing find in Castine!!
Stopped for lunch last week. Warmly received in this age of coronavirus, with proper distancing. My reuben was extremely tasty — tasted like homemade pastrami, with a hint of sauerkraut. My companion had one of several BLT offerings, which she said was very enjoyable. Chips and soft drinks rounded out the meal. We ate upstairs where distancing was easy. Worth a return.
The bakery offers a diverse menu for breakfast and lunch. The fresh baked blueberry muffins are a treat and the haddock chowder is a must. The specialty sandwiches are very good. You won’t be disappointed.
Over half the residents in this town leave before winter. A business has to be good to remain open. Markels has freshly made soups and sandwiches in addition to baked goods. Their rich, hot coffee is just what we need on these cold, Maine days.
fantastic food with wonderful folks!
I love this place. The food is incredible and the service is great. Great folks works there and I always look forward to our visits. Anything you order will be amazing.
Just off the main street, this innovative spot is a great place for breakfast or lunch. The staff is very friendly and they work together like a well-oiled machine. Casual, delicious food in a relaxed, homey environment. Place your order at the counter, choose your beverage out of the cooler, pick up your silverware and choose a table. Food will arrive as the wait staff calls your name to deliver it to the table. Excellent dessert bar and self service coffee.
Convenient location near the harbor. This is a self-serve shop with tasty baked goods and breakfast sandwiches. Everything was tasty. We were made to feel at home amongst local folks

Just off the Main Street lies this shop. We stopped for lunch, and the sandwiches did not disappoint. Extremely friendly service; as we visited after the peak summer season there were no crowds. Enjoyed!
We went twice during a week-long visit to the area, and we loved their pastries and delicious egg sandwiches. We didn't eat lunch there, but the offerings sounded wonderful!
Wraps, chowders, and yummy desserts! Indoor and outdoor seating available. This picturesque little place did not disappoint!
Thanks to my husband and his family I’ve been coming to Castine for the past 6 years now and we always stop at Markel’s! Best breakfast and lunch sandwiches. My personal favorite the Bakehouse Betty ❤️. Very welcoming and great customer service. The best pastries! Be prepared to add on a few pounds! So fresh and so good!
Walked in to get some breakfast and was immediately overwhelmed...do you sit and order or order from the counter, where is the menu where do you walk where is the coffee...after a few minutes we walked out and went to look for another breakfast spot. Unfortunately there was only one other on the corner, The Breeze & Castine Variety who stopped serving breakfast at 10:00!!!! Who eats lunch at 10am. So back up the hill to Markel's and the two guys ordering when we were there 5 minutes ago were STILL ordering....just shows how unorganized this place is. The menu is on the chalkboard which is the entire wall and impossible to read since the place is so crammed that you can't stand far enough back to read it plus you're in the way of customers coming and going. The pastries are in a little corner with no labels so its a guessing game. The place is so cramped that if you're claustrophobic you might want to wait outside. The only breakfast they seem to have are pre-made sandwiches, quiche, and pastries, all of which were so so....if you're hungry for breakfast, eat before coming to Castine.
