This place has some of the best sushi I’ve had in Maine. The waitress was attentive but not overbearing, the atmosphere was nice but not uncomfortable, and the food was wonderful. They made a great mojito as well. For the quality of the food, the prices were very reasonable, a great find in an area of Maine that can otherwise be so expensive.

Terrible food; not authentic at all, full of cultural appropriation. The mei fun is brittle and taste like soy sauce and nothing else

Sad to leave a negative review, but my lunch was so awful that I simply must share. Call me naive but when a coastal restaurant promotes “Fresh Oysters” as a daily special, how can one resist? The first batch were covered in hot sauce and other colorful toppings, which completely hides the fresh oyster experience. Then I asked for plain (no toppings) instead, and discovered immediately why they put toppings on. They were old and sour. They had turned. I tried one and sent the rest back, praying I wouldn’t be up all night.. The waitress was kind enough to take them off my bill. But then, the “purple lobster tempura roll” (also a “House Special”) was next. No flavor, ingredients were barely distinguishable from those listed…lobster tail had been heavily battered and deep fried to a dark brown chewy crust, and the “lobster meat” was a tasteless mush with orange food coloring! I dared not eat much of that either. Despite my disappointment, I did finish every drop of my sake. A girl’s gotta eat!

Shinbashi has changed it's menu since we were here about a year ago, but unfortunately the Japanese offerings/are less appealing. The miso soup was overly strong, and a side salad had a thick goupy dressing that had a very unpleasant flavor. Some of our favorite chefs special rolls are no longer available. Too many rolls included Kana or imitation crab, or sweet sauces. We chose the lovely roll which was O.K but still oozing with sauce. The salmon platter (3 ways) was the best item we ordered, both fresh and well presented. And we both agreed that the two white wines we ordered were good but also the smallest pours we have seen in any restaurant for years.

Ordered a margarita and it was undrinkable; tasted horrible, was really fizzy and made me gag with one sip. While waiting for the waitress to come back to the table, I noticed the drink had scoby-like long white slimy particles all through it, apparently the bar mix had fermented.

Since the waitress didn't speak English my friend and I scooped out the glutinous particles with a straw and draped them over the glass so it would be clear what was wrong. But neither the waitress nor her boss could understand why I didn't want the drink and what was wrong with it, they just kept asking me if I wanted another.

For the food, my friend had food poisoning the next day. she had a seafood dish with lobster. When she got home from the restaurant that night, she already knew she didn't want to eat the leftovers and gave them to her chickens, who avoided it completely. I had gotten the kung pao tofu, it wasn't hot when served and it wasn't spicy, it was also soaked in soy sauce and not leftover worthy.

I will say the won ton soup was very good.

We have a long tradition of eating here with family and friends but it's now on my do-not-go list.

We always treat waitstaff well and tip well and I have never left a bad review, but feel it's negligent not to in this case.

Something is just off about the food here. The flavors weren’t as expected for the iced tea, miso soup and chicken teriyaki. The sauce was very runny. I would not eat here again.

The Mongolian beef is my go-to here. It never disappoints. The beef is tender, not chewy. The onions, green onions, and shallots are fried to perfection, and the excellent sauce brings it all together. The only thing I'd like to see added is offering plain white rice on the online menu. I always like extra rice so I can warm it up with the beef later on, which is an excellent leftover meal as well.
