Today was our first time visiting, and even though we arrived right between the brunch and lunch switch-over, it was no problem, we took a quick ride to Waterville stopped at my favorite little shop, and came back about 45 minutes later.
We ordered the Buffalo Dip, the Italian Chop Salad, the French Onion Soup, and the Shepherd’s Pie Bowl, and everything was so good. Nothing tasted premade at all—the food felt like something you’d get at a swanky restaurant, but in this cozy, low-key spot with great vibes. The music was awesome, too!
Our bartender was incredibly sweet and attentive, which made the experience even better.
We came all the way from Bangor and it was absolutely worth the drive. We’ll definitely be back!

First, I want to say that our previous visit here was excellent and we recommended this place to many of our friends. Unfortunately, our most recent experience was disappointing enough that we’re now unsure whether we will return.
The food and atmosphere were still great, but the service was shockingly poor. We sat at the bar, but our assigned server wasn't the bartender. Our server did nothing beyond taking our drink order and later bringing my husband a soda. In 2 hours, she checked on us only once, and when we tried to answer, she walked away before we could say anything. At one point we tried to bring up an issue, and she told us it wasn’t her problem. The two times we were able to actually flag her down to ask for something, she never brought it. She spent more time looking for her phone and going to her car to find it than she did actually helping us.
Meanwhile, the bartender was the one actually taking care of us -- she took our order, brought our food, refilled our drinks, checked in on us, got our to-go box, and brought our check. She was fantastic, but she stated she wasn’t allowed to be the one we tipped because she wasn't our assigned server.
We also overheard another patron seated at the bar complaining about their service, so our experience didn’t seem to be an isolated issue. I’m giving 3 stars only because the food and atmosphere are genuinely great, but if we return and see the same server working, we’ll be turning around and leaving. The service simply made the visit not worth the money.

I can’t lie. This place is definitely vibes. I went there to chill. It was very good. The drinks are great I met some cool people over there.
We’ve eaten here a couple times. The food is great and the atmosphere is too. Both times they had bare minimum service-assuming that’s how they keep costs down. So Service was a little slow but everyone was friendly and apologetic and we weren’t in a hurry.

Every time I’m in Fairfield, River Jack Tavern is my go-to spot. The food is always amazing, the service is top-notch, and the view of the Kennebec River makes every visit special.
The staff are friendly and attentive. They make you feel like a regular even if it’s your first time. The menu has something for everyone, and everything I’ve tried has been delicious. Whether it’s a casual lunch or a relaxed dinner by the river, the atmosphere is warm, welcoming, and uniquely Maine.
If you’re anywhere near Fairfield, do yourself a favor and stop in at River Jack Tavern. Great food, great people, and a view that never gets old.

I’m a huge French onion soup lover, and I can confidently say this is the best French onion soup I’ve ever had in my life. We stopped here while taking my family to Santa’s Village and happened to find this absolute gem. The soup was unforgettable—rich, deeply caramelized onions, a beautifully seasoned broth, and that perfect blanket of melted cheese and toasted bread. I would gladly drive two hours just to have it again. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the service made us feel right at home. You can tell they care about what they serve and the experience they give. What a rare find—comfort, quality, and true heart in every bite. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
