We have been to Beach Pea a number of times but up until now had only bought bread (which was excellent). Today we ordered 2 cappuccinos, a raspberry croissant and a carrot cake cupcake. The coffee was so harsh it was undrinkable. The croissant had very little raspberry filling and the cupcake was so dense it was chewy and did not have much flavor. The bakery was not busy but the service was extremely slow. The young man who made the cappuccinos could not focus on what he was doing. Unless we are getting bread we will not go in there agani.

fast fresh and fun bakery right over the bridge from downtown portsmouth

i never knew the bread from supermarkets was all trash until i started going to Beach Pea - i havent bought bread from a supermarket in 6 years - this place can not be recommended enough

tons of specials / tons of great sandwiches/ cool staff (some of the time) / amazing bread! / decent coffee and white heron tea selections

the only possible drawback is it is so popular it is not uncommon to have to circle the building to find parking or have to navigate a long line indoors -

still though Beach Pea is the best bakery in the seacoast area - seriously

Love their their Monterey Jack and spinach croissants. Made for a beautiful breakfast for me. Being a vegetarian you don't find many places that cater to that.

We are so lucky to have this wonderful cafe in our neighborhood.

You can't go wrong with Beach Pea. The only negative is trying to decide what to have as everything is soooo good.

The best baked goods for miles around.

Generally considered to be the best bakery around. I am a fiend for baked goods, and have been to a legitimately concerning number of bakeries in my life, and I’ve never come across a comparable Fougasse.

Cute cafe with staff who are friendly, eager, and helpful. And the food was amazing!

Absolutely a gem for baked goods, hand crafted sandwiches, fantastic coffee, great New England atmosphere, seating inside and out with ample parking in beautiful Portsmouth area.

I just drove 1 hour to get there and 1 hour back. I have been to this establishment for years. My nephew worked here. I could never say enough good about it. However, today I was so disappointed. I drove there to get a cake for my daughter's birthday. The raspberry almond cake looked delicious. I waited in line for 10 minutes which was fine but when I got up to my turn I went to the desserts and the guy at the sandwich order line told me there was one line and I had to go see him. I told him I wanted some desserts. I inquired about the cake which they didn't have a 6 in. I could have gotten the 8 in for $72. but then I decided to get some random desserts. Probably equally the same amount of money spent or more. I also needed a few gluten free desserts.I needed to see what was available and the guy told me I would have to go back to the end of the line if I got out of line. How was I supposed to tell him what desserts I wanted when he was over on the other side? He did not offer to help me at all. I couldn't pinpoint what I wanted if he was in the other line, so it didn't make any sense to even order anything at this point. I told him to forget it and I left and drove an hour home. I will not recommend this place because of that and I will not be back. I work in a restaurant, have managed a restaurant, for many years and this guy today either had a bad day, or shouldn't be working with customer service. He just damaged your good name. Sorry I missed out and my plans ruined for sure.

I have been to this cafe several times in the last few months (April-May 2025). Inconsistent food and poor parking make me hesitate to return. This restaurant has outgrown its space. There is not enough parking, nor is there enough seating. They could really benefit from a new location. The food is really good -- except when it isn't. In mid-April, I had the #5 sandwich, and it was delicious. One week later I returned and ordered the same thing. Very disappointing! 99% carrots, one small sliver of zucchini, no red peppers, and they'd run out of focacia bread. Ugh. Rather than write a bad review, I cotacted them directly. The manager said she'd leave a gift card for me at the register. In May, I was coming back from Massachusetts, and made a plan to pick up lunch at Beach Pea. Again, no parking available. When I went up to the counter and asked for my gift card, it could not be located. I was told there was no manager on duty and none could be reached by phone, so I was not given any sort of discount on my lunch. This is very poor customer service IMO. Again, I emailed them and reported my experience. I gave them my mailing address, and they mailed me a gift card. Question is: Should I use it? My advice re: Beach Pea: proceed with caution.
