Specifically calling out Stephen. A server I’ve had twice and have been treated with so little respect both times. It leads me to believe this person doesn’t respect women or children in this environment and I can’t in good conscience return to this location. (Mind you, located across from the Children’s Museum).Edit to add : I guess the server name on the check was fake/incorrect. This is the experience I’ve had at this location with the same server. Also edit: There was a 0 productive response or resolution to my experience (x2)

Beer is great, the venue is great, lots of room and parking. Service is spot on.

Beers were not great and they do not offer flights. The menu had nothing that did not contain dairy. The male waiter was irritated that I asked for no cheese on a salad. I'm not asking for special treatment, just leaving the cheese off so that I don't end up with rashes among other long lasting issues that I'm sure he has the luxury of not experiencing. I was surprised at the attitude since this place tries hard to convey an "everyone is welcome" vibe lol

A must for any beer-lover who funds himself in Portland. New options, such as Baltic lager, stout, and non-alcoholic hop water, complement the original specialty of the house: IPAs.

Food, drinks, and service are great but they add a 8% charge to eat in, and another 8% charge for ordering drinks and eating in. An additional SIXTEEN percent just to sit and order food. Was not disclosed prior to ordering and for this reason alone we will not be back. Never in my life have I seen this and can’t possibly understand the reasoning

I've been a fan of Bissell Brothers since the early days, when they were still in the industrial park. I'm so surprised I haven't done a review yet. I loved Bissell Brothers from the beginning and there has never been another beer that has been able to top Substance. I can't believe how far they've come and how much if they've grown. Keep up the great work, BB!!!

Editing my review because the table service here is just so unnecessary and irritating. Hoping they see this...Love BB beer, love the space, love the staff, but the table service just kills it. It used to be an awesome place to go in, grab a beer, pay, and repeat until you're ready to leave. The table service turns it into what was a predictable visit to who-knows-how-long-this-will-take. We live within walking distance and went from coming at least once per week for a quick beer to wayyy less frequently because there's no longer an option for quick beers, and table service for a beer or two is silly. On top of that, food service is no longer as fresh and is regularly cold once it's delivered, which is especially bad if you sit in the Garden and your food comes from the old kitchen. The most egregious example was this past weekend. We sat in the Garden and ordered the fondue. It was delivered stone cold. Fondue kinda has to be melted, ya know, or it's just a block of cheese. This is a problem that wouldn't have happened if BB still used the buzzer and patrons still retrieved their own orders. Or at least if it did happen it would've been my own fault, which I'm much more ok with.Long story short, if we want to go to BB now, we have to consider the following 3 things:1 - How much time we have since there are so many unnecessary delays in service now, from waiting for the hostess to seat us, waiting for the server to come to order, waiting for drinks, food, etc, and then waiting for the tab. Not worth it if we only want a few beers or have dinner reservations or a show later.2 - What day/time is it? Will there be annoying and rowdy kids running around? When we're able to seat ourselves, we could avoid the families that bring their kids and let them run around unsupervised, of which their are many. With table service it's out of our control. I'm aware the Garden is adults-only, but that introduces concern #3...3 - Which food items to order, particularly if we're in the Garden, because if it comes from the other kitchen it will almost surely sit there quite a while and be served cold. No more ordering burgers, wings, anything hot, or anything with a sauce, aka 90% of the menu. That basically leaves salads and charcuterie that aren't adversely affected by the new table service. And I see the responses here and see that table service appears to be 'optional', but when you walk in and see a sign that says "Please wait to be seated", that doesn't feel optional to me. We did once walk by and order a beer and food at the counter, and when the food was ready the poor guy wandered all around trying to find us because buzzers are no longer used.Bottom line - This place was such an easy 5-star review previously. I have no idea why they changed their winning formula for the worse but now it's just a hassle. ?‍♂️ I'll be thrilled if they revert back and I can raise this back up. In the meantime this is a lack-of-understanding-their-customer-base-folly as big as "New Coke" and when Burger King changed their fries.

Edit 2/5/2024. My husband and I have been coming here frequently for years but I have to drop them down to a four because I'm not a fan of the table service. I hope they get rid of it and go back to the previous way. After reading Bissell's replies to others, it seems like customers can still order food and beer at the bar in the main space and not do table service? If that's the case, I would recommend putting up signs or having the host/hostess say that when you walk in because people are confused.Love the beer, space, and food. It's one of the best places to drink and eat in Portland. Some favorites are the kids burger, any of their pasta dishes and sundaes!

Place has changed from a brewery to a restaurant. They have great food and beer, but it takes too long.

Bissell Brothers has come a long way from their beginnings in the Portland Industry Park. The brewery has recently expanded into the space next door. There are two massive screens tvs, one in each area. They have many brews on tap and cans available for takeaway. Upon entry, depending on your hunger or just to wet your whistle, you will find everything you need. They have plentiful tables and a bar area that you can order food from as well. The menu has great choices and GF items if needed. During the warmer months, there is a small outdoor seating. If you long for some BB merchandise, they have a little shop for your desires. There is plenty of parking, pay by plate or by kiosk.

Been coming for a long time. The new table service model is garbage. And before they respond with the canned response about their new "Garden Lounge," it's garbage too. Service was terrible, and the vibe is lacking. Hate to see it... Doesn't feel like a brewery anymore.
