Good food, great cocktails. Just super super slow. We’re talking 45 minute wait time for food. So definitely recommend just understand it’s going to be a long night

Walked in without a reservation and we snagged a couple seats at the bar. Food was outstanding and service to match. Love that the menu is always changing, so we’ll have to come back. Highly recommend.

This was my second time to this restaurant and was overall disappointed by the experience. The food was overall good, but every one of the dishes was cold when it arrived. Additionally, our entree arrived well over 45 minutes after our appetizers. I expected more for the price in terms of service. The tables next to use arrived 15 minutes after we where seated and received their appetizer, entree, and desert prior to use receiving our main course.

Everything was perfect. The service, the cocktails, the food, the presentation. Did I mention the service? Cannot recommend enough for a delicious dinner.

10 stars for service. Every server here is on the same team and they all help out which is so rare to see. They are nice enough to squeeze us in without a reservation and the food was delicious. The menu changes every day and it's definitely safisticated. Small bites and expensive but the atmosphere and great service was worth it. We ate almost everything before taking pictures it was that good.

Everything you could ever dream of. Caring staff, impeccable and inviting service supported by delicious Spanish Inspired cuisine prepared by well trained cooks. I had an out of body experience, I felt like for a brief moment, I had woken up from the matrix of everyday restaurants and was transported to an elevated, yet relaxed and super comfortable environment that exists in either my memory or my wish that all restaurants were like this. You'll be grateful you checked this place out on your visit to Portland. It sets a really high bar and I will just have to go back as soon as possible.

I mean. C’mon. Chaval is such a classic Portland spot that you’d think the servers’ stoke for food and drink would wane over time, but it is quite the opposite. The staff welcome you in as if you’re old family friends arriving for a warm reunion. Our server, Asher, will make you feel like family is many ways: make you laugh, feed you good food, give timeless advice, and give you grief for using your phone at the dinner table.
This place is what makes Portland *Portland.*

Had reservations at Cheval tonight for 4 people at 5:45. We arrived, ordered drinks and appetizers by 6 pm, as well as the rest of our dinner. There were a very few people in the restaurant. At 7:15 we were asking waiter where our dinners were. During the 1:15 minutes we never saw the waiter. When food arrived, My husbands steak was not edible as a steak knife could not cut it. The rest of food was very mediocre. This is the first instance my husband in 40+ years has never left a tip. This was our worst experience in a nice restaurant.

It is so rarely that I am surprised by food. This menu is surprising, exciting, and so completely satisfying. I feel I will be talking about the duck sausage for a long time. Every single item we ordered was unexpected and delicious. The service was charming and engaging. I am so grateful we ate here!!!

Pretentious. We routinely frequent Europe and this restaurant is attempting to recreate the Spanish / French dining experience. I’d call it a fail. We ordered some tapas and were informed by our server that “the kitchen likes to have full orders before getting started.” In all our travels, no restaurant in Spain or France have been so full of themselves to require patrons to put in their full order. While the food was decent, the experience was spoiled and we went with a smaller order than we otherwise would have. Maybe we had a bad server who gave us incorrect guidance. We’ll never know because we won’t be back.

We were looking forward to celebrating my sister's birthday on Saturday, July 27th. Unfortunately, even after asking 4 times to turn down the music or change it to more soothing music, the manager would not do it. They were playing rap, pop music and our table was right under the speaker . My sister had a splitting headache and they still wouldn't turn down the music even though we ended up being the last people on the terrace. That being said, the service was good and the coq au vin was absolutely delicious. The farmer salad was excellent as well. The small plates of patatas, meatballs were just okay. The shrooms with tuna chorizo were not very good. Also disappointed with the churros and madeleines. The chocolate was very bitter and the Madeleines were just okay. The strawberries and cream were good.

Like most all the other reviewers, no need repeating this was like being back in Spain.
My suggestion if the weather allows request outdoor seating. It’s small, cozy and makes for an enchanted evening.
Our particular waiter was not very helpful but I’m absolutely certain this is not the norm.
I highly recommend. We tried most of the small plates and each was authentic and excellent.
Parking: Tight but you’ll find a spot.
