Scales provides the best dining experience every time. The bar is our favorite spot, we love watching their talented team shuck oysters and prepare salads. If you're in Portland, do not miss this place!
We couldn’t get a reservation for a table within 48 hours, but we were able to get a reservation the same day to sit at the bar during the dinner hour. We had a really good time talking with our bartender Guy. He made my husband an old-fashioned with berry flavored liquor, which were amazing. We both had lobster rolls and they were completely delicious and we also had fresh blueberry custard with blueberries from Maine. This is a really fancy restaurant on the harbor. Lots of windows and light make this space look huge.
An absolute gem!!!! I am from Houston, Texas and took my boyfriend here for a surprise trip to Maine and chose to dine at Scales. Absolutely best food I have ever had in any restaurant in all my travels (and I’ve been to 40 states and 30 countries). This presentation of food, the combination of flavors, combination of textures; IMPECCABLE!!!! We were sat immediately for our reservation time of 7:30, although it did take 13 minutes to be greeted or provided with water by our waitress. But once she did come to us, service was excellent from then on. The restaurant was slammed and it was Monday. I will literally come back to Maine from Houston just for this restaurant.

Nice waterfront restaurant with cozy feel. Had some great bites - the rolls w butter n chives, clams, sweet potato lobster bisque, halibut, and Scallops with bacon and mushroom. All delicious!

What a nice place for a weeknight evening out! We trudged through the bitter cold and made our way into a warm and inviting setting. All of the food was nicely prepared and presented. The Grilled Brown Bread was a special treat - along with fresh salads, dense clam chowder, and crunchy fried belly clams - but it was the Baked Haddock that stole the show! Perfectly cooked, with a creamy sauce that was ideal for such a cold and snowy night. Desserts made for a nice, satisfying finish to the meal. Dinner ended rather abruptly when the server presented us with the check without being asked for it, and before we had even finished our dessert! I looked at my watch and noted (to myself) that we had been seated for a grand total of 61 minutes. We were 15 minutes early for our reservation and seated immediately; he clearly wanted to turn the table over as quickly as possible. Presenting the server with cash for payment, we received only bills as change, with the house holding onto an extra 65 cents. I know this may appear petty on my part, but if they eschew coins, then my feeling is the house should have rounded up 35 cents in our favor. It felt like a greedy end to what could have been a solid B+ dining experience.
Shhh... Don't tell anyone, but the lobster roll here was my favorite in Maine (yes, better than all of the roadside lobster pounds). Lots of other delectable menu items too. Fried clams and oysters were great too. I also really appreciated the mocktails. And I can't leave out the amazing ambience. A wonderful place to spend a celebratory evening with friends.
Ben the waiter was great! We had a huge party fitting two huge tables and everything came out great and delicious

Terrible food and way overpriced. The food lacked any flavor and very oily.

Sorry for posting half eaten food. It was too good to resist. This is only the half of what we got 😁. I went with my teenager and shared all of the dishes. The wait staff were knowledgeable, friendly and very patient with us.

My wife and I were blown away by the food and service at Scales. The fish dishes were amazing and the bar service was over the top. We will definitely be back!
