Cozy BYOB place that hasn't changed in years. We all love this spot for an intimate dinner away from the hustle and bustle of other Portland restaurants. Husband + wife team serving German classics. Romantic. Maybe ok for older kids.

Spent a couple of days in Portland and this was by far the best meal we had. The food was amazing and the cheesecake was one of the best we've ever had.

Can't say enough great things about this restaurant. Food was, hands down, the best German food I have ever had. The cheesy spaetzle with sauteed onions was adult mac and cheese - pure heaven. And the onion and gruyere tart - I'm still dreaming about it. Sauerbraten was fork tender. It's BYOB, and only 18 seats, so reservations are a good idea. Seats only 18 people total. Not the best area of town, but safe enough.
Go! You won't regret it.

Cute small German restaurant with delicious food and very homey atmosphere. It's also BYOB or wine, so note that for when you visit.

Best German food around! 🇩🇪 This cozy, traditional Eastern European restaurant is a true gem. It’s BYOB, which adds to the charm, and every meal begins with perfectly baked rye bread, just the right amount of caraway, and a flavorful spread.
We always start with the Zwiebelkuchen, an onion and Gruyère tart topped with arugula. If you’ve never had it before, it’s a must-try!
Since we can never decide, we split two of our favorites:
The Schweineschnitzel – thinly pounded pork loin, breaded and fried to golden perfection. We recommend pairing it with the rich potato gratin.
The Schwäbische Spätzle — soft, hand-pressed dumplings made from flour and eggs, layered with caramelized onions and Emmenthaler cheese, and served with a cucumber salad with dill on the side. The textures and flavors are incredibly comforting and satisfying.
This place is loved by locals and German food fans alike. Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends, but walk-ins can sometimes get lucky. We also highly recommend their takeout. It was our go-to during the pandemic and continues to be a favorite.

Best German food you’ll have this side of the Atlantic. A great, cozy restaurant with run by a friendly German couple. My advice would be don’t sleep on all the side dishes here. Even if you’re normally not a sauerkraut person I’d highly recommend that as well, it’s light, warm and sweet. Highly recommend the pancakes with sour cream and homemade apple sauce, as well as the potato salad and the zweibelkuchen (onion cake).

A Truly Memorable First Taste of German Cuisine!
This was my very first time trying German food, and I couldn’t have chosen a better place than Schulte & Herr in Portland. Words that come to mind: more than delicious, authentically prepared, home-cooked goodness, and an experience I won’t forget.
The highlight for me was the Split Pea Soup—absolutely incredible! Every bite was comforting and flavorful. The entire meal felt like it was made with care, and the service matched it perfectly: warm, attentive, and classy.
If you’re in Portland and looking for a dining experience that feels both special and down-to-earth, Schulte & Herr is a must. I’m already looking forward to my next visit!

I ate there with my partner and some friends last night.
The smoked fish salad I got was very good: a very well composed dish, and really heavenly smoked fish. I may have to be back soon...
One of my friends got the bratwurst plate, and he remarked that the temperatures of the different components where all perfect, and not the same, a neat trick to get right!
My partner says it was the best service she's had in a restaurant this year, and I agree.
