I had heard about this place as the go to donut stop in Maine. While making a day trip figured I'd stop by. I really wanted to like these, but I couldn't bring myself to take another bite after we worked our way through a half dozen. They get A+ for creativity and donut flavors, but for me they're just not my type of donut.
It's been mentioned before, but these are DENSE, HEAVY donuts. A dozen probably weighed close to 8#. Their store advertises as Maine potato donuts, you'll need a drink to moisten these bad boys up. I was underwhelmed and mildly disappointed.

No places to sit. Also, we purchased two hot coffees only to realize all three of their carafes had run out. Donut was good.

I stopped in here while walking around Portland on a Thursday in November. I do t actually like donuts very much but I had heard that these were good so I decided to give it a try. I got the original so no icing or extra stuff. I liked the texture of this donut - it was more dense than a regular donut. It wasn’t overly sweetened which I liked. It might have been better if it was warm but it wasn’t bad. If I had to choose I would pick this over a regular donut. I walked here so not sure on parking but pretty sure it’s metered street parking.

Friends of mine got me $100 gift certificate to the holy donut in February for my birthday thinking that they shipped. They did not so I called them and asked them if they would. I would sign a piece of paper saying I know the donuts won’t come in one piece, etc. They would not budge on that. But said hopefully in the future they were going to start shipping and the gift certificate has no expiration. So once a month I go on still no shipping. Today, I go on and by the grace of God they have started to ship! Best day ever right? So I go and I put my order in for my chocolate toasted coconut gluten-free donuts, and the gift card isn’t working. So I shoot them an email and they get back to me basically saying the gift certificate was bought before they started doing shipping so I can only use the gift certificate in store. and I said OK well I live in New York. I’m not planning on coming to Maine at all. there’s nothing you can do? Can you cancel this gift certificate and re-issue me one that I can use online so they wrote me back and said we discussed it and there’s really just nothing we can do. So my boss, owner of a small business bakery, called and tried to talk to them from a business perspective, and they still would not budge and said they would not give me a new certificate to use online. I had to use the one I have in store only! I was someone who praised this company at their amazing donuts, I sent anyone who said they were going to Maine to this establishment and I will never do that again. What a bad business decision.

Ran out of gluten free donuts early and donuts are displayed in the open and not behind glass. Debating on how sanitary and fresh they could be when they are stored and displayed that way. I would recommend getting there as soon as they open so you don't have to deal with the issues we encountered. We will not be going back.

The Holy Donut in Portland, Maine has some seriously delicious donuts, some with amazing flavors. The one with bacon and maple syrup was a very nice surprise! However, we regretted not being able to taste them on site, and it is a shame that there are no lattes or matcha offered on the menu. It would have made the experience even better.

The donut was cold and didn’t taste fresh. It’s beyond me how this place can be so highly rated, perhaps I ended up there on a bad day. Hard pass for me.
