Our strip steak was small and grizzly, my wife ended up putting much of it back on her plate. I gnawed through mine which was tasty but a small portion size.
The potatoes were very undercooked. My wife was uncertain as to whether they had been cooked at all.
Of course it was a special occasion, my spouse's birthday; I owe her one, some place else.

Had a quick breakfast on our way out of town. Made an odd request for some peanut butter toast and Anna hunted some down for me. Awesome!

Had brunch at this restaurant and it was fantastic!! The atmosphere in the hotel is cute. It used to be the newspaper building, so they carried this theme through. They have vintage typewriters on the wall in the lobby, so cute. Our server, Anna, was so sweet and kind! Food was sooooooo good. I would highly recommend this place. This is off the beaten path in Portland, it’s not in the port area, but the walk is so pretty to get to it. You can go up to exchange street, with so many cute shops. Definitely worth the short walk, especially if you’re there on a Sunday and all the other brunch places by the port have 45 minute waits.

First time in Portland and had a wonderful brunch at The Union Restaurant. We were pleasantly impressed by the wonderful atmosphere and hospitality. The decor is comfort with nods to their past, a typewriter and suitcase walls are such a delight.
The restaurant is full of windows letting in the natural light. We were warmly greeted by the hostess, and Anna our waitress was a delight.
She answered all our questions and gave us some
wonderful suggestions.
Our cappuccino and latte were wonderful and when our food arrived it was freshly made with generous portions.
Highly recommend and we will definitely come again!

My husband and I had a small elopement dinner in the Newsroom at the Union Restaurant and it was lovely! The food was delicious and Jaida was a pleasure to work with both in planning and throughout our dinner! The room was beautifully decorated and we were treated to a delicious blueberry pastry and creme brûlée.

Food was disgusting!!! The only thing good about this place was the drinks. Everything was either flavorless or just covered in pepper. Very disappointed considering how much money we spent. I wish I could get my money back it was such a waste.

We went to Union last night in the Press Hotel at the top of the Old Port for dinner and a nice bottle of wine. I don’t know what happened to the food there, but both of our meals were so bad. My husband had the strip steak that was literally impossible to eat, chew or swallow. I had to try it too because he never complains and eats just about anything. Not this time…. Our waiter was wonderful and he took it back and brought him the pork loin option. It had a 1/2 inch of fat through it and was dried out and like leather. Also, it sat on a bean concoction and the beans were crunchy and not cooked through which is fine for broccoli and carrots, but not beans. My scallop dish, and I say scallop because it was one scallop sliced in 4pcs., was raw and chilly in the middle, which is fine for some people, but i would not have ordered it if it was described as such on the menu. We couldn’t lie to the waiter and tell him it was great, because it was so bad, and our waiter insisted on taking the steak and pork meals off the bill…(I didn’t even mention how I felt about mine). We don’t have a problem paying hefty prices for good food, and we really enjoy going to nice restaurants, but we do expect the food to own up to the price. This place used to be good and had a great chef when it first opened, but I could see the cooks in the open air kitchen, and could sense they were very young and inexperienced. We most definitely won’t go back to Union again as Portland Maine has some of the best restaurants in the country. It’s sad because the waitstaff there is A-one, and we tipped our waiter as if we had paid for
the food that would have been on the bill. It certainly wasn’t his fault the food as terrible. I really hope things change, because the competition for good food here is fierce, and Union is no where near a contender anymore.

I agree with the last review, 100 percent. We are staying in the hotel, which is LOVELY, and decided to go in for breakfast this morning. There were 4 tables and 6 people at the bar when we sat down, 10:25 am. We got a great seat looking into the kitchen to see the ‘action’. Unfortunately that turned into the problem as we waited and waited and waited for our order to be called and prepared. Having worked in a kitchen for many years, I understand the pressure and appreciate the hard work, but 45+ minutes for eggs and bacon was a bit too much. They worked one ticket at a time, which would explain the delay. Our server was great in trying to distract us from the wait, but it took a LONG time for the food to come out…. 11:15. Then the price….. Croque Madame for $25+, 2 eggs and hash $25+…. Total w mimosas was $115…. Disappointing start to our day for sure. Good luck!!

Food was pretty decent, but took a long time to come, very expensive especially for the lack of quality service, ie. $5 for drip coffee without anyone asking if we wanted a refill. Also no refills on water. Otherwise pretty chill spot.

I had breakfast at the Union this morning. Overall I was disappointed. Not sure if it was the slow service, the NY City prices or the food as a whole. Not that it was bad, but it simply did not justify the sky high prices. In my case, I had the shakshuka. It came out searing hot in a cast iron pan. So hot that I could not taste the food. I also felt they could have used much larger eggs, they might as well have been quail eggs. At $19, I expected much more.
If this is your "thing", great. I you are looking for a sensible hearty breakfast, go elsewhere. Wish I had ...

The restroom was actually in the hotel portion, but It's 2024, why do public restrooms not have a changing table? The staffed asked to sit us in the "lounge waiting area" because our reserved table "wasn't ready" (there were many open tables at the time) away from the general restaurant area even though we had a reservation. Put three little bar tables together to sit at, which were still dirty from the night before.**Absolutely felt discriminating to families with kids. 2/10.**Food was good, too pricey for a brunch service. Server was friendly and attentive.
