I was recommended to come here by a friend last year and when I tell you I’ve been thinking about it since I came back to visit… I really have. I’m a native New Yorker (so our bagels are famous) but they don’t compare! Probably the best bagels I’ve ever had, the staff is super friendly also. Get here early because they are always busy and rightfully so!

I was introduced to this local neighborhood bakery by my brother in law about 6 years ago. He is a local and we live in upstate NY. Whenever we are in town I make it a point to stop here for bagels. These are some of the best bagels I have ever had. 7/19/18 Update:Back in town, back for the bagels. Yum. 7/28/22 Update: back for the bagels and they're great. Like the new shop layout. 7/7/25 2nd update. Bagels are still amazing.

My 1st time visiting Scratch Bakery but it won't be my last. I'm on the hunt for the 'perfect' bagel in the Portland area and visiting as many bakeries as I can to sample. After Scratch Bagel, I'm not sure i need to continue the hunt...the sea salt bagel was perfection....still warm, crispy outside, soft and chewey inside...and tasted wonderful with only a hint of slightly sour fermentation, but not so overpowering as to be a sourdough bagel. As you enter the bakery, it's set up in a U shape...breads & bagels 1st, followed by the 'sweets' case, then refrigerated items (salads, cream cheese, etc) & coffee..then the pay station. Everything is so efficient that even on a rainy crowded saturday morning, it only took 10 minutes before i had my breakfast in hand! For those of you in need of a wonderful little bakery for the best bagels...go to Scratch Bakery......but DON'T leave without purchasing something sweet for after. I left with both a blondie and a brownie and they were FABULOUS!!!!

Scratch Baking is my favorite breakfast spot in Portland! On my recent trip to the South Portland area I went here three out of five days I was in town. The bagels and pastries are top notch. The grab and go service is fantastic and even when there is a line the staff works hard to make everyone’s experience fast and smooth. Although the atmosphere is a bit different from your traditional breakfast spot, once you get the hang of it this will be your new go to stop.

My wife and I had been to this bakery once before and it was not a great experience. We decided to give it a second chance and we were pleasantly surprised. They had changed the way you ordered and that changed the whole experience. The new way to order is very organized and the staff, this time, were much more pleasant. We tried some different sweets and breads and they all were very tasty. As we are frequently in the Portland area this will become one of our regular stops.

This needs to be anyone’s must go to places if in Portland. I drove 15 hours from NC on may to see family for the holidays. I ordered a vanilla cheesecake it was absolutely amazing 10. I also ordered a chocolate cheesecake it was amazing 10. I ordered a carrot cake it was the best carrot cake i have ever had. I also ordered the chocolate ganache cake and this is the best of the best so glad i found this place absolutely great. They are so friendly and helpful.
First time visiting. 10 out of 10 would come back again if in the area.

Scratch has literally never disappointed me in the 10 years I’ve been picking up goodies from here. The coconut cake, molasses cookie, and almond horseshoe cookies are to die for.
