We have been going to Billy’s Chowder House for over 30 years. We’ve always had exceptional meals; however, we’ve noticed a big change in the quality of food as well as the price. We noticed servings become skimpy yet prices increasing.
One of my favorites is the lobster roll and seafood stew. The lobster roll was minced lobster meat which was much less than previously. Definitely not worth the price. I’ve always enjoyed the seafood stew which again had much less meat in a large bowl of light cream for an extremely high price.
My husband ordered swordfish. It was very good , but again the portion was half of what we’ve experienced before; price was high for such a small amount of food.
We did reach out to the owner who informed us that nothing had changed, and wasn’t really interested in hearing any feedback on our experience.
We weren’t asking for any meal comp or future discounts… just wanting him be aware of a disappointing expensive meal.
Very disappointing and not sure we will be returning to one of our favorite restaurants when visiting Maine.

The service was great, the view was very nice, the food was just ok. Maybe chowder is different in sth Maine, but we did not care for the clam chowder at all. Very thin, watery with a layer of butter floating on top. Not many clams at all and was served just barely warm. The seafood stuffed mushroom caps- mushrooms in a small bowl with a thick layer of seafood stuffing spread across the top of the mushrooms. The stuffing was dry and uninteresting and not stuffed into the mushrooms. The fried clams strip dinner and fried shrimp dinner were not bad, just not really good. And they also were served warm, not hot. Maybe we just hit a bad night for the kitchen, but with so many places to choose from I would not drop another $130 here.

I found Billy's via Google maps and thought to try it out. Great service. Place was packed for lunch.

The clam chowder was not good. Better name would be watery potatoe soup with small chuncks of clam (if you can find them). It's possible that I am used to northern California's creamy version, and having been in the family steakhouse business long ago, I know there will be bad days.

What an awesome place for food! Only negative comment would be the price of their Lobster Roll at 39$ VS the cost at other local places is much higher. All other dishes were decently priced. I recommend, food was very tasty

We visited Billys 6 years ago, and haven't stopped ranting and raving about it since. We FINALLY made our way back this year, and it was even better than we remembered. Clam chowda is a must, but everything is amazing! Great food, beautiful location, and can't wait to go back!
