I rarely write Google reviews, especially negative ones but I felt compelled to share my experience at Chapala Mexican Restaurant yesterday.
To start on a positive note, our server was fantastic. She was attentive, helped us choose drinks and appetizers, and handled our concerns with kindness. Unfortunately, the issue began when we ordered the Quesadilla with Scallops and Portobello Mushrooms. When it arrived, the scallops had an overwhelmingly strong fishy odor, making the dish nearly inedible. We voiced our concerns, and our server graciously offered to replace it.
What completely ruined the evening was how the so called “manager” chose to handle the situation. Instead of listening, he came to our table and argued with us, saying: “This is what you ordered, and this is how scallops are supposed to smell.” Buddy, I’ve eaten scallops enough times in my life to know the difference between fresh and spoiled, frozen ones. When I mentioned this, he dismissively told us: “If you don’t want this, then it’s your problem, not mine.”
That response was not only unprofessional but also disrespectful. We weren’t trying to take advantage of the situation and we barely touched the food. There’s a huge difference between a picky customer and the one pointing out spoiled food, and the fact that the manager couldn’t see that says everything about what’s wrong there.
If the manager happens to read this: You need to understand that Chapala isn’t some one-of-a-kind gem in Ann Arbor. There are countless Mexican restaurants here, and most of them serve great food and provide great service without treating customers like they’re the problem for pointing out a legitimate issue.
I’ve been coming here for nearly two years, but after this experience, I will not be coming back and I’ll be telling my friends and family to avoid this place too!

Sara legit brought us so much good food I spilled water and she was so understanding and cleaned it up and then at the end of the night have me recommendations being a traveler in Michigan for the first time she was amazing!

Chapala is always a great place to spend time with friends, eat some hearty Mexican food, and get a delicious margarita. I will say the music is very, very loud, so that can be bothersome, especially if you're trying to have a conversation. I would say come here for a fun pre-game or something, and to have a fun celebration!

Went there for the first time with my niece and her friends for her birthday and the food was good. Enjoyed the song and shot they gave her. Then the bill came. Seems I had the same issue as someone else with the tip/gratuity issue. Was told bill cannot be separated which should have been told upfront in my opinion. Then when I asked if gratuity was added because of what I saw on the bill I was led to believe it was not. So I left a 20% tip which was an option to choose from. Total say $264.26,yet my account says $303.32. Seeing that this has happened more then a couple of times maybe they should do more to make this clear. At this point it seems to be intentional. The food and atmosphere are good. Wait staff are very nice. The drinks are strong and it's very close to parking so it's not a long walk. With so many great qualities I'd make sure to fix this issue because no one likes to feel stolen from. I guarantee this will continue to be an issue.
Ordered tacos mexicanos with extra onions, they barely came any onions and the rice and beans didng even cover the bottom of the container. Called in and they confirmed so more disappointment. Ordered the mixtas fajitas and I called in to make sure my doordash order was good and they CONPLETELY FORGOT THE TORTILLAS AND SIDE SALAD!!!! Shame on them I had nothing to eat it with as it didnt come with backup utensils. This place is a hit or miss lately, and they no longer provide chips and salsa for their tacos mexicanos

We had a large party (12). Even though it took a long time to seat us and it was getting close to closing. They seated us and we placed our orders. The food came very quickly. The service was great and the food was really really good. I had the Birria tacos and they were as good as the best I've ever had. I will definitely eat there again!

Horrible service. When asked for a lemon, they said they do not have it, when I saw the lemon on corona bottle on the people seated next to us. Then I asked for black beans - they do not have it either!! Which Mexican restaurant does not have black beans and lemon. The food was not up to the mark, very oily. Also caution to those who are party of 6 or more. They charge a 20% gratuity flat and then ask for additional tip. I would avoid this place.
