On a Friday during Lent, I wanted to find a fish option to dine at with family. From what the menu was offering, I was pleased and happy to give it a try. There is a very tight parking structure nearby to take advantage of which is handy but again a real tightly packed space. I find the atmosphere of Hazel’s was maybe the most appealing part. It has a nice color to it, that I enjoyed. While the staff however does not. They projected a more gothic feel, in their black clothes and rather neutral or uninspired expressions. Just a couple of smiles and kindness could’ve changed that but 2/5 stars for service is generous. I ordered the Georgian Bread, the Crab Cakes, and the Lobster Roll in their Connecticut style. Their cheese bread at $17 may be the most interesting item on their menu. A Neapolitan experience which is virtually egg yolk, three cheese blend, and chives. No complaints at all, this made my Italian stomach happy. The Lobster Roll entree and Crab Cakes appetizer came out. I would say for $20 the crab cakes are as standard as ever. I’d like to mention it’s better made than most, however nothing to write home about. The Lobster Roll at $33 was flowing with lobster, the roll was soft and fluffy. Connecticut style has it served hot and with butter on it. The other variant, “Maine style” would be cold and with mayo on it. The entree came with a bag of sea salt potato chips. I’d say this was a good fill to a lobster roll desire. For a seafood Friday, we indeed got our fill, at a high price. Seeing as I cannot speak highly of the service, it’s unlikely I will return to Hazel’s with haste.

Hazel’s is one of those no-brainer places you hit with friends or family when you’re looking for something casual. Some dishes are better than others but overall the seafood is fresh and tasty. The servers have all been very tentative and nice over the years which makes for a positive experience. This is definitely a place I will continue to patron and recommend.

Atmosphere first. To be considered a somewhat casual fine dining and reservations only established it was lack luster. The service was subpar. Our waitress did not have grins and smiles. The hostess was not welcoming or friendly at all. She seemed a bit snobby like we weren’t supposed to be there. The food. Everything came out fresh and hot, however the food was so salty I/we couldn’t really enjoy it. We order the gator bites, salty! The calamari, salty! Chowder fries started off good then became very salty! My crab cake sandwich was not salty, however the bread to crab cake ratio was improper. The crab cake was as thick as a baby carrot. The wings had good flavor but the texture was chewy. My youngest daughter order a cheeseburger. Along with her, my oldest daughter, and wife they agreed the burger was great. Sadly I don’t eat ground beef. Will never return. Had a good night with my ladies though!

Nice atmosphere. Wait staff okay. The food was nothing to write home about. The price point of the food was not worth what you received. I am surprised this place takes reservations. Fox2 really tricked me.

I’m not much of a seafood person, but Hazel’s in Downtown Birmingham definitely had some standout items that made the dinner worth it. The cheesebread, Caesar salad, and Wrecking Ball dessert were all excellent and memorable. On the other hand, the lobster roll and fish and chips were just okay for me and didn’t feel worth the price—but to each their own.

The service was very slow, and our waiter had a hard time hearing us, though she genuinely tried her best. The ambiance was a highlight, especially the entrance with its charming nautical and submarine-inspired decor. It’s a cute spot overall, but I’d probably stick to non-seafood dishes next time.

The food wasn't that good.. The lobster roll 🥐 was horrible and the salad was as well can't remember which one I tasted, but it wasn't good... It's mainly the atmosphere and the location that makes it a great place to enjoy being out with family and friends

Appetizers and oysters were great. Lobster bisque was amazing. My entree left something to be desired, however, with the fish being dry and the dish overall lacking in flavor. Some other entrees at our table were met with more approval, hence the 4 stars.

Ordered oysters, wings, cheese bread, halibut, and snow crab. Everything was delicious except the snow crab. The quality just wasn’t there. I eat and cook snow crab often. They were really dirty. Chef, please remember to let the snow completely thaw. Be sure to scrub any debris off the crab legs. Oven roast them for 15 minutes and you have perfection. Anyway I was really disappointed in the snow crab and they were pretty pricey, they were just sooooooo dirty. For a place that specializes in seafood I was disappointed. Anyway everything else was great! Our waitress was also amazing.

Jeff sucks at service , reflection of management. Leans his body on our table. Never brought bread for soup. I watched my husband eat his entire Halibut. No entree, as mine was well done and dry. Sent it back. Left hungry. Jeff never told manager. Too busy getting all his table orders. Awful !!! Spend your earned $ where you are appreciated. Over rated Hazel's.

went yesterday for lunch. $7 happy hour. they had either gin or vodka for $7 so i got gin ???? and loved it too ? my bartender, who was literally a dream. amazing customer service… she made me a gin with a lavender lemonade or something like that and it was very good. It wasn’t super sweet and i could definitely taste the difference between the gin and tequila which is what i normally drink. The wings didn’t have a lot of flavor but the ranch was good and they kept their temperature for a very long time. I went back and forth either the whitefish pate and the wings and they never got cold. That’s major points in my book. They have a very seafood heavy menu. I would love to come back and try some more stuff.

Our server Matthew was awesome. He greeted us with a smile and humor. We ordered the soup and salad combo and the lobster roll. The soup was Devine and it had lobster in every spoonful ?. The lobster roll was filled with lobster from one end to the other. Everything was delicious and we will visit again soon.

Ordered a large carryout order from Hazel’s today, for our office. They got it done fast. Food was still warm when I got back to the office. Everyone thought it was delicious. I personally had the blackened salmon Caesar salad and I was scraping the container to get every last bite. Prices are high, but for the area and the times we’re in, it’s expected. We would definitely get it again.
