I truly appreciate the energy of the owner, and the bartender Christine, and Alejandro. I have never felt more safe in my entire life. They truly care about the reputation of their establishment and the safety of their patrons. I will always recommend this place a millions times over, every single time I’m in the city. Truly a hidden gem that shouldn’t be hidden. 100/10. If I could rate this place a million times over I would give it 100/10 every single time.

First time vist, was recommended by a friend. Good conversation and felt like one of the regulars. Definitely going back

We were turned away from this speakeasy while trying to celebrate a friend’s birthday and were spoken to in a way that felt discriminatory and degrading. The treatment we received made it clear we were not welcome because of our skin color.
This was not about dress code or capacity—it was about how we were treated. Completely unacceptable and not a place I would recommend to anyone expecting fairness or respect.

Quite the late-night place to be (in downtown Detroit); great live music; big energy big crowd turn out; nice touch when in a long line waiting outside and the security and host allowed all the ladies to move to front of the line. Eclectic decor. Multiple sections to the floor plan for table seating. I recommend anyone go check it out for oneself.

Cool place with occasional live music. It is a little cramped, I wouldn't recommend a group larger than 4 unless you have a back up plan. They do have some tables for 6ish closer to the back but when I asked to get sat there the bouncer said it's closed, then 15 min later I saw some people go sit back there. Table service can be a bit slow when it gets busy so just buy from the bar in that case.

Edit: i appreciate the response!!

Café D’Mongo’s is one of Detroit’s true treasures. After a long night out, nothing hits like their grilled cheese—it’s legendary. The vibe is unlike anywhere else: live music from one of the most classic house bands in the city, drinks poured in solo cups, and the energy of a house party but set right in the heart of downtown. No frills, all character. Come for the music, stay for the grilled cheese, and leave with a story.

4/5 stars because the N/A options are water and sprite only, and not very wheelchair friendly

Great music, great bartenders! This is by far the best scotch selection in the downtown area, and the most hospitable bar I have ever had the pleasure to step into. Thank you for your kindness, D'Mongo!
