Today, I needed a bit of help because my phone had died before I could pay my bill, so I asked my waitress if she could lend me a charger. I could tell she was already irritated—even earlier when I asked about the Wi-Fi connection for my laptop.
I paid using the QR code and even added a 25% tip, but my card was declined because I accidentally used the wrong one. Instead of handling it discreetly, she came over and announced loudly to the entire restaurant that my card had been declined. I told her politely that I was taking care of it, but I also let her know it wasn’t appropriate to make that announcement publicly or to speak to me so dismissively.
She just looked at me and said “okay” in a rude tone dismissive way. No have a good day when I walked out. So clearly she had an issue of me correcting her in the way she handled me as a customer.
I recently moved to the neighborhood and, im a professor at the local university. So I’m not stopping by or visiting. Norms is walking distance from my new home.
In a community restaurant—where hospitality, respect, and care are supposed to be at the heart of the experience—moments like this really matter. It’s not just about the transaction; it’s about creating an environment where people feel welcome, not embarrassed or talked down to. The way a staff member handles a small issue, especially in a neighborhood space that relies on trust and connection, reflects the restaurant’s values.
Unfortunately, that interaction didn’t feel welcoming to me in many ways— and seemed toned deaf in the current climate where everyone is struggling and shouldn’t have to be subjected to humiliation — Nisa C. And because of that and the lack of hospitality when I left, I don’t think I’ll be returning.

$18 burritos = a lot of unseasoned eggs, two strips of bacon, cheap tortilla and store bought pickled jalapeños.
Historically a dish for poor working class folk, but gentrification cares little for this nor feeding you wholesomely in exchange for your hard earned money.
Very disappointing

My favorite spot in the city. The tuna melt slaps but ever single thing is perfect imo.

Best breakfast around, we love Norm’s! The food is 10/10 every time and the service is great. Also, their bathroom is the best smelling bathroom I’ve ever used.

Fantastic little diner! Service was friendly and fast. Great food with twists on the standard fare. The menu is small but well crafted. This is upscale diner food, not a greasy spoon kinda joint. Definitely recommend!

Easily my new favorite breakfast restaurant. The chocolate chip pancakes were perfectly balanced, the house made sausage patty was a great compliment. The coffee is the best diner coffee I’ve ever had and I dare say even better than drip coffee at a lot of standalone coffee shops. The breakfast potatoes were delicious and unique. My boyfriend really enjoyed his vegetarian breakfast burrito with avocado. I would absolutely come back here. I’m already planning my next trip. Servers were absolutely chill and down to earth. Such an easygoing, delicious restaurant in a cute part of town.

Honestly, best pancakes ever. And I’ve eaten my share. Found this after the Detroit marathon. Worth the 45 min drive.

Whatever you order you will be getting the best version of. I have never had a disappointment at Norm's. The menu may seem simple but the execution is phenomenal and extremely elevated. No misses 10/10
