Al Sultan: Where the Salad is Soggy and the Owner Thinks He’s Your Daddy

About 15 years ago, I lived near Al Sultan, and when I recently had a craving for a chicken fattoush salad they were the first place that came to mind. Big mistake.

I picked up the salad between 7 and 8 PM to take to work. A couple of hours later, I sat down ready to enjoy it—only to be hit with disappointment. It didn’t taste anything like the salad I remembered. The chicken was off. The lettuce? Wilted, mushy, and disgusting. And to make matters worse, they had already drenched the whole thing in dressing. Pita chips included—so you know they were soggy and sad.

Now look—I’m not someone who lets money go to waste. So I called the restaurant to let them know what happened. I spoke with someone named Sam—maybe the manager, maybe the owner. Instead of a simple explanation or even an apology, I got a full-blown lecture like I was his teenage daughter who broke curfew.

Sam told me “this is how everyone does it.” Really? Because I’ve eaten at Outback, Texas Roadhouse, Red Lobster, Flemmings, The Highland, Bucharest Grill, and more Mediterranean restaurants than I can count—and nobody ever pre-drenches a salad for takeout.

All I was trying to explain was common sense: I didn’t eat the salad right away. So of course the pita chips turned to mush, and the lettuce followed. If he’d just said, “Next time, request the dressing on the side,” this review wouldn’t even exist.

But no—this man stood in front of guests, likely his wife and child as well the way they were gaping and gave me a verbal spanking. Who talks to customers like that? Who talks to anybody like that?

Thank God for a little weed and some self-restraint, because I almost lost it. I reminded him: I’m not one of your kids. Either remake my food, give me my money back, or hush. He chose to remake it.

But let me be clear—I will never eat there again. I handed that salad to a homeless man on my way home. Why? Because after the way I was spoken to, I had lost all appetite. That food carried the taste of disrespect.

I used to recommend this place. Never again. In fact, I will now go out of my way to discourage anyone from eating there. Unless, of course, you’re into soggy salads and surprise lectures from men who think they’re your father.

Bon appétit.

We ordered the baba ghanoush, hummus and Shawarma chicken sandwiches. Everything was absolutely delicious. Service was fantastic and friendly. Perfect atmosphere for our middle eastern lunch. Highly recommend!

Absolutely incredible experience! This is hands down the best Mediterranean food I’ve ever had—everything was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. From the hummus to the grilled meats and sides, every bite was amazing. The staff was so kind and welcoming, and the service was top-notch—attentive without being overbearing. You can really tell they care about their food and their customers. I’ll definitely be coming back and recommending this place to everyone I know!

I ordered a carry out. I'm a fan of grape leaves and ordered the meat grape leaves. I've never had a worse experience. The food was too salty to consume. I ate 1 of the 6 stuffed grape leaves and it was VERY salty. If I have an order that comes in pieces and the first piece is bad, I'll give the 2nd piece a try with the consideration that it may just be one piece. NOPE.. all 6 pieces were salty. In the trash they went. I'm so disappointed as I've been going to this restaurant for over a decade. I'm pretty sure I won't be back.

I have been in this area for a long time and have always loved Mediterranean food. Without a doubt, Al Sultan blows all of its competition locally out of the water. Their staple dishes are leagues above the others, in a way that makes me not even consider other restaurants. If you need something for lunch, the Chicken Shawarma sandwich with a small side of garlic from Al Sultan should be on your list of considerations.

It is one of the best Middle Eastern restaurants in the Dearborn/Detroit area! You have to try their de boned chicken with their homemade sauce. It's REALLY REALLY GOOD! Also, a heads up, they put tomatoes on their chicken shawarma sandwiches. It's not bad if you like tomatoes, not every Arabic restaurant makes them with tomatoes just so you know!!

BEWARE
Been coming here for 20 years. Ever since David left to run Al Malek down the street on Warren rd, this place has sadly gone downhill. Ordered the House Sandwich and Chicken Shwarma sandwiches, both were very bad and didn’t taste fresh at all, very disappointed. Lebanese Salad was $12 and just a pile of ice berg lettuce with dressing, tomatoes not fresh. Hummus is always on point though. Restaurant is spotless clean and staff is very nice, but absolutely not worth the $36 I wasted so we can make peanut butter and jelly to eat instead now (true story)

I will never order from this place again.

This was my first time ordering from here, and the service was great. They were extremely nice. My only complaint is that I felt like my food wasn't as seasoned as I am used to with this cuisine, and there was a 3% charge for using a credit or debit card. Because they were so nice, I will give them another try. I've heard great things about this place and maybe it was an off day, but this time I will use cash.
