Not worthy of the 4.7 stars. Went there on a Sunday and had the lunch buffet. It was okay. The place is dirty.

Very inconsistent taste and flavor.
Sometimes medium is too spicy and other times it is completely bland.

Review of Kolaa Urundai at Grand Indian Cuisine, GR.

The smell of incense, aromatic food and the owner welcomed me at the restaurant.

Dish I tasted - Kolaa Urundai

*Looks* : Deep brown, crusty, looked well cooked. Reminded me of BBQ and meatball looks, very appetizing.

*First bite* : Crusty outside provided mild pleasurable resistance to the bite. The crust gave way to unexpectedly pleasant and soft inner stuffing.

*First taste* : Taste explosion! I did not expect that good a taste. I was expecting Dhokla or paruppu urundai or Mysore bonda type taste. This had a wonderfully different taste.

*Texture* : Outer crunch was a pleasure. Inner soft stuffing had its own mix of textures from its ground ingredients that are well enjoyed by the palate. It was neither mushy nor homogenous like Dhokla/Mysore Bonda though those dishes taste good in their own ways.

*Heat/spice* : Perfect for a buffet. Personally, I would like a bit more heat but that's only for my Indian taste palate.

*Final word* : Its a superhit in my books, no exaggeration!

Best Indian food in the town. NO KIDDING. We Came from southeast Michigan and tried this place and was amazed with chicken and paneer dishes and their authentic and homely taste.

Update 2025: Unfortunately, the quality of the food has gone down since my first visit — it just didn’t taste as good this time around. What really made the experience uncomfortable, though, was the atmosphere. I’m assuming it was the owner, but someone was loudly scolding an employee over a pricing issue that came up during a phone order. It was really awkward for everyone dining in; that kind of conversation should happen privately, not in front of customers. Also, no one checked on our table the entire time — we weren’t asked if we needed anything, and our drinks were never refilled.

This is the BEST Indian place in Grand Rapids! The food is absolutely delicious and the portions are huge. The service is also fantastic and they are always so kind and friendly. I’ve been coming here for 2 years and I’ve never had a bad experience. Food is always fantastic. The mango lassi and murgh anfgani are my go tos! Will definitely keep coming back!!

The flavors reminded me of home-style Punjabi cooking.

Food is very nice. Had a very terrible experience with the guy working there, clearing the tables prematurely even though we haven't finished our meal.

We have been enjoying food of this restaurant for a few years now and always loved the authentic flavors. Recently had them cater for our party. We received many compliments from our guests for taste and the perfect spice level. Sharmila was very helpfuI and worked with us on the menu and qty for food. I highly recommend this restaurant!

When I took the first bite, it felt like I was eating in India. Not every Indian restaurant makes food that tastes authentically Indian. I only ordered veg Schezwan noodles for takeout because I was in a hurry, so I didn’t try other dishes. Maybe next time.

I usually buy Chicken Dum Biryani, which is really good. This time, I tried Malabar Parotta and Chicken Chettinad. The Parotta was undercooked, and the chicken in the gravy was not good—it was hard and tasted off.
