Service/food was very slow. We were there for about two hours. We ordered right away as we had plenty of time to look at their menu. Some things were not available, which was totally fine. But even ordering right away- We still waited at least an hour for our first appetizer and they sort of trickled in after that point. The drinks- mostly just pours of wine, also took quite some time. Overall I would say if you’re looking for a view- photo opportunity- this is a decent spot for that in Grand Rapids. Definitely not a place for exceptional food, drink, service.

The service was pretty terrible. It seemed like an inexperienced staff or a staff that truly didn't care about the customer. They were night busy the night we were there. We continually had to ask for refills on drinks. For a party of 6 they brought out half of our tables food. We then waited another 12 minutes for them to bring out two more steaks, which they then cut in front of you. That process to 10 minutes to cut the steaks but they didn't bring out plates to serve the steaks on. The steak cutter went back to the kitchen and grabbed 3 plates (we needed 4). A different staff member finally realized we were missing a plate and went back to get another one. They completely forgot about a side dish that was ordered and brought that out after we asked 3 times and our steak was nearly finished. There were more issues, but I'll spare you the details. Very low quality service. The food tasted decent, but not worth the price. I will not be returning.
We have always loved the food and drinks at Merten. We tend to pop in for a quick cocktail, and enjoy a meal on a special occasion too. This time around we noticed a change in food quality and the retro drink menu was mostly dissipated. Sorry Merten, I never thought I would be disappointed. We are usually so enthralled. Maybe it was just the day, but it takes a lot to put me off. For those looking to enjoy a special meal, the staff is always sweet and kind, that has never changed. I don't know if we will be back for a special day anytime soon.

Ok so if you want a good view of the city and decent vibe ONLY this is the spot, The food is overpriced and just not good.We ordered 1 of every appetizer to try it out and vlog since it was on our list and looked amazing. The pretzel was really hard and I believe it came with horse radish (ew). We asked for either cheese or ranch to dip ,which they do not have(wtf). We then ordered some drinks and I asked if you have lemon drops, Well it wasn’t on the menu but she said np she could make it…she brung me back lemon juice with liquor and said “I think I did this right” I looked up the recipe. Omg when I tasted just pureeeeee sour and gave me bad sharp stomach pains to the point we had to leave. I felt bad because the waitress was super nice but if you have a bar get people who know how to make drinks. Great view but it’s a No for me we still have all the food leftovers and will probably donate it to homeless downtown

We were not notified of substitutions to parts of our food until the food was sat in front of us, and then we were only told the differences on one dish of the three. For the price tag, the food and service should have been top notch. Fail on both.

Merten's rooftop was amazing! Highly recommend it!! The view is incredible of downtown GR, as the rooftop is on the 9th floor. The food and cocktails were delicious. Very attentive staff. Can't wait to go back!!! Their restaurant on the main floor of the building is outstanding also. I can't wait to go in try their new fall menu. The restaurant has historic charm and the food is soooooo good!!

The manager Laura went above and beyond expectations. I would go back to Martens rooftop just for her service alone! Don’t miss this beautiful venue. I will be back and have told many people of this fine dining restaurant!

The food was ok. Not worth the $300 (pre tip) we paid. Only 1 alcoholic drink in that $300. There were 4 of us. I don't have a problem with a $300 bill if it's amazing food, but other than the steaks ($60 for just steak) the rest of the food was blah. Not a lot of options for gluten free either. Services was AMAZING!

I reserved seating on the rooftop for a bachelorette cocktail hour. What you see in the photos online for this space is NOTHING like the actual location. While the online photos show beautiful cozy seating, area rugs, real plants, umbrella stands, etc..... the REAL location is a basic rooftop with no rugs, no umbrellas (even in 80+ degree weather), no cute seating (just some basic bistro tables). Bistro lights weren't on. No umbrellas to provide shade. Railings were covered in ugly faded plastic greenery vines. The drinks were okay - nothing special. We didn't have food. The service was fine -- nothing special. When we went to walk in the restaurant, the doors were locked and the man at the door acted annoyed we were here, even though we made a reservation (which required a credit card and came with a $20/person fee if we didn't show up or were late). We thought we were going to a special spot for a drink before heading elsewhere for dinner. We thought it would be a fun spot to see the city and take a nice photo of our small group. We were not a rowdy group --- we were hoping for a classy location for our girls' day. Was totally disappointed. Won't be going back.

Food was average at best. Service was ATROCIOUS . The server was more worried about getting the menu off the table instead of the dirty dishes. We waited almost forty minutes for her to bring our bill because she was standing in the kitchen putting on lipstick.. If it was busy and she was overwhelmed, but it wasn't even full. And there were 3 servers on there. There was no reason for it to be that sub bar

This Restaurant definitely does not match what they advertise. If you are viewing the menu before you even step in to Mertens, you have in your mind that you're going into almost a five star restaurant but this is not the case several people got up and walked out in the middle of their dining experience because Mertens was out of popular bourbons and entrees they wanted to order. The service was deplorable with our first server. The second server our bartender was a delight but she can't be responsible for the awful food. She tried to give us a pleasant experience. We stayed to give it a chance but we did leave without our dinner. We ordered the shrimp linguine. The pasta was undercooked and was one big bowl of starchy gooey mess. We did re order with caution but when they brought the salad which we could not eat we decided to cut our loss at 9:00 pm and find dinner elsewhere. My friend bought our 2 glasses of wine which sucked 31$. They should have not charged us. This place ruined our evening. We had to look for another restaurant at 9:30 pm. Thank God Leo's was still serving.
