The outside of the building looks really nice. When we pulled up, there’s a large sign saying that for dine in we have to go around the back. It also said that it was the best Mexican food in town. Those are big brags for the Mexican district of town. We were very excited to try it. They have a very nice store in the front that it appears can be used. The back entrance was not as nice as the front of the building. We didn’t even know if we were going in the right door because it said take out everywhere. When we went in we were asked if we were taking out and we said that we wanted to dine in. So we walked behind the counter into the dining area and sat wherever we wanted. It was pretty chilly in there. Just coming from work I had to use the restroom. Everything seems like it’s newer and and decent condition. It was freezing in there. When I came out I should have done what I wanted to do and leave. I hate being cold! We tried ordering horchata which is a staple of any true Mexican restaurant. They had coke products…not Mexican Coke however. My future husband ordered tacos and I ordered tamales. (Backstory I have been wanting tamales for a couple of weeks) My fiancé was not thrilled with his “Mexican style” tacos. I didn’t even eat my tamales. It was covered in Kraft American cheese slices and it was so hot I could r even try it for a while. When I did they were cooling down and getting hard like microwaved pizza or bread. I did not eat the tamales and was asked how I liked my food. For the first time in probably years I said exactly how I felt about the food. I did not like it it was hard. I have never had American cheese melted on a tamale before I tried wiping it off but the tamale was hard by the time it actually cool down. The server asked me if I wanted anything else and I said my chips that I ordered and the refried beans are fine to eat I don’t want anything else. I was not willing to try another dish. If ever Gordon Ramsey had to come to Grand Rapids to save a restaurant, this would be it.

Visited La Cosinita today. Very good Mexican food. Family business. Very accommodating. Spoke with Jose and Lupita the owners. Very nice folks. We had some tacos (barbacoa, chorizo, pork and chicken) and menudo. You can tell they were all freshly made. Jose also makes his own tortilla. You can tell. They were soft and fluffy. His menudo reminds of a Filipino dish called sinanglaw. Jose does the tripe very well. It was very good. They had 2 kinda of sauce - a creamy salsa Verde and a red one. Their spiciness were just right. Jose is from Texas so I think there's some Tex-Mex influence in his cooking. The interior is very clean. Will be going back.
