We both had the bison short ribs and they were to die for - falling off the bone tender and so much flavor! For dessert we had the lemon creme brulee and carrot cake. Both were amazing. The service was great and the atmosphere is a nice balance of laid back sophistication. Highly recommend!
A unique space; large leather chairs, lovely fireplace , cozy atmosphere. The leather armchairs are a bit lower than a regular dining chair - kind of like a little kid at the grown-up table. We ordered soup, an appetizer and two salads. They all came at the same time - not a relaxed meal. The waiter apologized, but be specific on the timing of the food.
Exciting new place to try when visiting downtown GR! The drinks were well crafted and the staff gave great recommendations. Crab cakes and calamari stole the show for appetizers and the portion size was respectable for 3 people. The NY strip was cooked to perfection and was well presented when served. Fun place to stop in and enjoy the ambiance.
This place has a great atmosphere, and the cocktails are top notch. We found the food to be so-so and a bit overpriced.
We sat at the bar since the place was quiet at 4:30pm but it was a great experience all around
Amazing meal and service. Highly recommend for anyone looking to celebrate a special occasion.
Not totally realizing how the restaurant was designed with three dining sections, my 10 day old reservation ended us up in the bar. This was supposed be an intimate birthday celebration but sadly it turned out to be sports night in the bar. Not at all what we had anticipated. Too loud with all sorts of bar music and for the money average food and service. Not our best experience in GR.
Great food! Music was a little loud but they turned it down. Bourbon list is weak. They do not carry Sambuca?
Visited Scholar for Grabd Rapids Restaurant Week. Three course tasting menu with optional cocktail and wine pairings. The three of us generally order the same option. Crabmeat beignets, leek tart, lamb meatballs. Chef prepared. One side salad divided amongst us. Completely satisfied.I would definitely return. .
Went to Scholar for restaurant week. The food was very good, our only complaint was the timing of bringing food/drinks to the table. The pace of the meal was not good.

Food was great, service was decent but not top notch. Ambience would have been a 5 if the temperature near us had been good. We were against an exterior wall and between two windows and were very cold. Should have some additional heating devices for tables in that area when it is cold outside.
We had never been to Scholar before and we had a wonderful experience. We were celebrating our first wedding anniversary and we and a card for us on the table and they even comped our appetizer that we ordered, which tasted amazing. We will definitely be back!
Was looking for a place similar to our favorite Detroit places and saw this place and figured what the hell, pictures look good. Well I am beyond happy we gave it a go and happier that we made reservations on the back side of the most popular times. We got an amazing table in the "Study" or at least that's what it felt like but was actually the basement. Heavy wooden table with couch seating with a beautiful view of the entire space. Our server was just incredible. Gave us a very brief rundown of the menu and special then went off to do his thing before perfectly timing his return for when we were ready to order drinks and appetizers. He then took our main order when he delivered our drinks. This timed our appetizer arrival such that we could enjoy it and have a brief respite before our main course arrived. Food was amazing. No part of the dish was overpowering the others which allowed us to enjoy every aspect of the meal. To taste the many ingredients in a perfectly balanced medley of flavor is an accomplishment most places just can't achieve. Very happy for the evening and we are already looking forward to our next visit.
Didn't love the food at all. Cocktails were decent though, so would consider as a place to meet up for a drink.
Understaffed it appeared... we waited a long time to see a waiter but when he came, he was kind . No bread served. Food was fresh and tasty but overpriced , in my opinion . . 40.00 for a piece of salmon , is NYC & Miami salmon price point . Enjoyed , but would not return .
