Coney Island, located in downtown Kalamazoo, is a beloved restaurant known for its delicious hot dogs. The hot dogs have a slight crispiness and are served on lightly steamed buns with an original recipe coney sauce. The mustard is applied using a wooden dowel, and the diced onions are consistently sized and carefully portioned. The atmosphere of the original location is warm and inviting, with a black and white tiled floor, an old ceiling, and a view of the downtown traffic. The staff is friendly, patient, and helpful. The restaurant also offers hamburgers, gyros, chili cheese fries, and onion rings, all made to perfection. Visitors often praise the food and the friendly service, with many saying it’s a place they would return to again and again. The smell of coney sauce on the stove and the sight of hot dogs on an antique griddle create a nostalgic vibe. Prices are reasonable, making it a great lunch spot. The restaurant has been a staple of Kalamazoo since 1915, still run by the family, with the son now managing operations. It remains a simple, clean place with a cozy feel and a strong local history.
