The service was friendly & efficient! The food was awesome & you get large portions. I had the kids Bento & it was enough, my son had the Udon bowl & had enough left over to take home. My daughter had the Octopus appetizer & said it was delicious! We sat by the window & it was cozy. I will be going back whenever I am in Kalamazoo!

Was actually pretty good. The Miso was very good and miso-ee lol. The rolls were good and the bento boxes also good. I gave 4 stars because no Asahi or any beer to wash down their awesome food.
If Toba Sushi and Ramen was a human, I would get down on one knee and propose. That’s it. That’s the review.
Just kidding. I have had the pleasure of eating here several times now. Each and every order was absolutely delightful and worth every single penny. It takes all of my self control to not eat here at least once a week.

A cozy, intimate sushi and ramen spot with a rustic feel and a homey vibe. Right off the streets of downtown Kalamazoo, parking is a bit scarce depending on when you go. Heading inside, my husband and I were immediately greeted and offered a table. Serving staff was very welcoming and quick. It took a while for them to come back to the table for things, but they were quite busy. It was well worth the wait anyway! Wonderfully balanced food, hearty and rich flavors. The ramen is awesome here. We also devoured the Chicken Karaage, definitely recommended. I'd love to try the drinks here next time we come. My only gripe about this place was how dirty the lamps above the sushi station were. That HAS to be dropping into food in some way.. so I'm glad I didn't order sushi. Also one of their employees could not keep her eyes off our table and she was behind the counter the entire time. It was just a little awkward, I'm not sure what she was looking at or for. ? Would come back regardless. Don't let my weird experiences throw you off. This place is worth the money. Affordable as well!
Vegetarian options: They have some vegetarian/vegan options.
Parking: I'm sure there are other options for parking besides the free street parking, but I am not a native to Kalamazoo, so I am not sure what else there is to use.

Ordered the Toba Ramen and some sushi rolls. The rolls were messy, but fine. The ramen was supposed to come with chashu and instead came with little pieces of meat that look and tasted like Tyson frozen chicken. Nothing like any chashu I've ever seen or tasted.
The house ramen came with froth on top and tasted like a cheap canned chicken noodle soup. The spicy tuna roll smelled bad, was grey in some places, and was stringy. The place also smells bad as soon as you walk in. We couldn't even eat the food because it was so bad. The Gyoza was alright so that was the only thing we actually ate.

First of all. This place is filthy.
The table and seat has a layer of grime on it. It’s tolerable. However, their bowls and wooden plates also have a thick layer of grime on it. Very sticky.
I am not sure where did they get their table. Which is so unstable and every time you put or take something from it. It looks like an earth quake is occurring.
Their food taste wise is mediocre, excluding the fact that it may not even be eatable base on the gross sticky dinnerware. We had Ramen, Kani salad, Takoyaki, Volcano Roll and Ikura Nigiri.
In the menu, they mention their ramen broth took 10 hours of cook time. But I am sure it’s from packaged broth from vendors. They didn’t cook it on site. That’s sad. Noodle couldn’t spread well and sticking to each others. The chicken breast taste is fine, but we were expecting chashu listed on the menu.
Takoyaki is also from package, not house made, a bit overprice for store brand food item. The shaved dry salmon for garnish is in good size, however very hard to chew.
Volcano roll and Spicy Kani salad are similar item. The Spicy Kani salad is the imitation crab salad on top of the volcano roll. Honestly the taste is ok, the problem is the Kani. It is old and dry, and I suspect those are the lowest quality Kani they are using. For a suggestion, put cucumber in your kani salad and spend a little more on the ingredients. The volcano suffered from same issue.
Ikura nigiri is no exception, disappointing. It came in a dirty plate. The two pieces of nigiris were in different sizes and the seaweed wasn’t able to stick to the rice. The salmon roe taste a little off also.
The server is nice, just forgot to give us utensils even after the appetizer arrived the table. Beside that she is fine.
Almost forgot to mention their water. It come with some sort of funny taste. Not recommended.
For people who want to try this place. My recommendation is don’t go. For the restaurant owner, my recommendation is wash your dishes and clean your table.

First time visit to the downtown location based on the recommendation of my daughter, a Hilton food n’ beverage director. Our server Mia was awesome, very attentive, pleasant and knowledgeable. We tried the spicy scallop and spicy salmon rolls and the kimchi ramen which was delicious. The rolls were fresh and substantial. The very intimate sushi/noodle bar vibe was perfect. Toba is a hidden gem! Flavor bomb score ????
